"Posting" hunting spots.

Had some hunters come and ask permission to hunt our land in SD. They were going to hunt a nice little slough on a quarter section that is a nice spot for ducks. Permission was granted. Several days later, my Father in Law was driving by the slough and noticed it was posted by the same folks who were given permission to hunt it that one time. Turned out to be a couple of MN boys.

They were called and told to never ever come back. Talk about balls.......

Fella that farms my ND land told me he got up one morning and his whole farm was posted. It was a local guide who he had not even given permission to hunt much less post his land. After a limit hunt for ducks across the road from my farm one oct morning a few years ago, I was having some coffee in my house with my wife. I was thinking about walking up to the hill which is fenced pasture and shooting a couple Phesants or sharpies. While sipping my coffee I thought I heard a shot. Got my Binos and looked up on my hill, sure enough there were four or five guys hunting my land. The biggest issue was that one guy, as he finished his soda, threw the bottle over his shoulder onto my land. Next day my land was posted too! Rich

Years back three of my friends and I scouted a public marsh a couple days before teal season. Rule was first come, first served and no permanent blinds. We picked an area and no blinds were present. Slept in our cars over night and were set up in our spot 1 and 1/2 hrs before shooting time. 5 mins before shooting time two guys come out to a blind they had put up the day before. Needless to say things got verbally very ugly. Two of us got frustrated and left but my other two friends stuck around and got information on the two guys. The one was an ODNR wildlife officer with his friend. My friend was high up in DU and got the right people involved. ODNR officer got repremanded and we got apologies, but no teal. Turns out the officer was using his authority to control hunting in the spot for his buddies.
I respect the majority of ODNR officers, but power corrupts some for sure.

Never seen the posted sign's here in Ga But a few years ago while hunting Retts island we got to the spot we wanted to hunt around 330am set up decoy's and our blind and sat and ate and waited on shooting light, right at daylight a guy motored up right in our decoy's and started raising a fuss that we were in the spot he wanted to hunt and had to leave. We told him first come first serve. He got madder and started cussing and threating us. We laughed since there was 4 of us and one of him. He then went off bout 75 yards and sat in his boatand sky busted for a while , my cousin finnaly killed a BW teal and when his lab jake went to pick it up the guy shouldered his gun like he was going to shoot the dog. And My cousin and uncle got upset and started over to have a talk with him. He left then. when we got back to the docks we imformed DNR and they said they'd had other reports of the same guy.

Back home in Quebec, people stick a plastic water or milk jug on a tall stick in the mud/marsh, and with that, they can claim that spot, and the 300 yrd zone around it for all eternity - even if they never go there again. Some will also put up a sign that says the number of hunters and dates they plan to hunt a spot - on public property. If they find you anywhere near it, they come over and put up a big fuss saying that the stick or sign gives them the right to hunt there.

I have to admit that I've seen a thing or two here in Jersey, but the majority of hunters I've met have been polite. I haven't seen any posted or no tresspassing signs (yet). A few really sour people, who wish they would have showed up earlier to claim "their" spot, but that's about it.

Doesnt Maryland and/or some parts of North Carolina & Virginia have some really strange blind regulations???
Maryland has some funny laws regarding blinds as well as who can legally hunt where (must be or be with a resident of the state on a lot of places) and Virginia is just a total mess with the blind laws locking up a lot of public hunting East of I-95. You cannot hunt within 500 yards of any registered blind whether it is occupied or not so when the blinds are spaced just right there is nowhere to legally hunt the shoreline in that area, even on public water. Luckily the blind laws only apply East of 95 so if you live out in the western part of the state (like me) you don't have to worry about them.

I think one of those signs would be ideal for testing your shot pattern on.

Thats what I usually do.
I've got a new screw-in Poly-Choke and its amazing.
John Bourbon- Teal still up on St. Lawrence R. too, lots of em'.
I don't have any problems with signs in AK, just the darn bears!!, haha!
Amazing stories and predicaments guys, I feel better, I'm not alone I guess.

When I was in school at UVM in the mid 1970s, it was standard practice to mark a spot that you were going to build a blind with a sign with your name and phone number on public land. It was only to designate a spot where a blind would be built for the season and it was spelled out in the regulations that this only gave you the right to build the blind and that the blinds would be first-come first served no matter who built the blind. It seemed to space out blinds and control the crowding caused by people coming in and setting up on your little piece of heaven. I knew the manager at Dead Creek WMA who thought this was good method of spreading out people.

hey Bill, I remember talking to a local ranger from down that way it was a local thing for the opener. Really doesn't hold your spot . The tresspassing sign though is over the top.

With all this talk about posted signs, permits for blinds and over crowding. I'm glad I live where I do. In our township I can build a blind almost anywhere with nothing more than my name and contact info attached to it. We can also just pull the boat up to a marsh island and call it home for the day. Once back on the main land thats a different story. Over-crowding is everywhere on this island.
