Guys,
Friend Ted and I got out rail hunting Friday at the start of the super moon cycle. That means that the tide was high but not as high as it was over the weekend and will be on Monday.
But I couldn’t hunt on the weekend and can’t hunt Monday. You go when you can go.
The other problem with the high tide on Friday was that it peaked at 7 AM. That meant we would miss due to darkness the time leading up to high tide. But you go when you can go.
We ended up with six birds. I wanted to take some shots for you of birds flushing but instead took some shots of friend Ted on the marsh. The shots aren’t really indicative of where the birds hold. They hold along small creeks in the marsh that have the heaviest cover. There is also one pic of the marsh on the declining tide. You will see little triangles of "film" hanging on to the spartina grass. In the sunlight these little triangles look like diamonds scattered over the water. Beautiful!
Included is a pic of my latest purchase: a 1971 2 hp Johnson to go with my 13’ Grumman. I picked it up on Ebay from Wisconsin for $180 which is low, low for one of these in good running condition. Tried it in a bucket: it purrs. There is no end to the fun that one can have with a canoe and one of these old motors, for both hunting and fishing. They are super reliable and just as important, easy to work on. The self-contained gas tank holds, a pint or a quart of gas I believe. And apparently this one-lunger will run on that from New York to Boston.
Friend Ted and I hope to use the rig this Saturday when the split in SC reopens until the end of January.
If you remember, I also picked up an Old Town 119 in the last two months. No need for anything under the tree for me. I am a blessed man.
Hope you all are well.
Larry
PS: I heard from a friend who lives in Sault Ste. Marie, MI that he duck hunted in December in the UP for the first time this week since the 1970’s. He reports lots of Redheads still in the Straits of Mackinac and northern mallards still in the UP. Amazing how warm it still is in the Midwest!
