Primer for WRC?

I am in the process of carving some mallards for the upcpmming season and was loooking for thoughts on what primer to use. The bodys are Western Red Cedar with Basswood heads. I will be using Behr housepaint. Any tips on prepping the wood prior to priming would also be helpfull, I seem to get mixed results with the WRC. Also I have seen where some carvers tint the primer grey. I have never done this and am curious as to what the advantages are?

I would say the tint just serves to not show bright white primer under painted surface if scratched or chipped. I,ve always had good luck with just using KILZ primer under Latex & or oil based type house type paints.

I have been using shellac under tube oils. I would imagine that it would also work for latex. Apply one coat and then sand the raised grain and fuzz. Apply second coat and apply finish coats over that.

I use this https://www.pettitpaint.com/media/5226/ez-wood-sealer-product-data-sheet.pdf
It's a phenolic resin and tung oil. Work great for me.
Tinted primer, I tint mine medium to dark grey
