Puppies/dogs and poop....

OK, so here is a lovely picture for you. My soon to be 8-month old brittany puppy has developed a fondness for poop - her own, I think/hope. She has found cat poop on walks and has picked it up here and there, but she now seems to be eating her own doo quite regularly. Is this normal for puppies, and will she grow out of it? We are picking up the poop in our yard every day (once or twice per day), but we may miss some here and there. She finds it. Is there anything that we can do to deter her? Is this due to some deficiency in her diet, a behavioral problem, or something else?

I had a Lab that developed a "taste" for it as well. We were feeding Purina Beneful, when we switched to Pro-Plan Senior (she was 8 at the time) and it stopped. I believe it was because she wasn't digesting the food completely so to her the waste was still food.

There are lots of remedies out there but I think most dogs do it because there is something lacking in their diet.
 
As a puppy my lab would eat cat poop when he came acrossed it. But never his own. He stopped with the cat poop around a year.
 
them cat treats they love with the crunchie sprinkles on them,,right out of the treat box...

My Miss Daisy when were out hunnting if she finds deer or rabbit ,treats she horks them down ,if i dont catch,i have to watch her that will be the way she gets worm for sure..i deworm her alot due to this bad habit,,to her they must be raisins and smartys....

we have given her different food alot and and it has finaly seem to have stopped for some reason??

A disgusting habit that our female lab has also acquired. We discovered that she was enjoying our other dog's treats and then this winter started tasting her own. We bought Distaste tablets from Drs Foster and Smith and started adding them to both dog's food. The problem appears to be solved. She regressed one day recently when we had forgotten to add the tablet to the other dog's food the day before.

We switched her food to Blue Buffalo and will see how that works out. She has not been eating the plain dry Purina Pro Plan, unless we add some wet food to it. I suspect that maybe she was not digesting all of the food we were giving her. She tends to eat a lot of grass and other greenery (including sticks and what not) out in our yard. The Blue Buffalo food has a lot more veggies/ruffage in it and no grains, which is best for dogs, I have been told.

I pick up the yard of poop in the morning and in the evening. She found a pile in the corner of the yard and I told her to leave it and pushed her away. I think she is getting the picture. I had to charge her with the e-collar once when she was about to pick up another piece. That got her attention as well. I am hoping that this is just a phase or maybe a dietary issue that we can resolve.

Yep, either my right or left hand depending on what kind of mood I am in. I should buy stock in the company that makes those little plastic poop bags.

When I bring the dog for a walk I recycle plastic grocery bags.....They are probably banned in MA I bet.
 
Mine likes rocks. First it was just pebbles, she would sit and eat them like rice crispies. We'd find the chunky poos later. Then it was rocks too big to pass. She's normally a real chow hound but then would be off her feed, next thing you know would puke up a whole lot of food, mucous then a big rock. She likes any kind of trash, even trash that was left on the ground when our house was built 3 years ago and since was buried and has grass growing over that she will sniff it out and dig it up. She likes to dig up the irrigation system too and chew that up. She won't touch her own poo, in fact we found that the way to keep her from digging is just to put some poo there. Or, we make up some "sh&t water". Put it in a garden watering can and water larger areas she likes to dig up. Although she won't eat her own poo she wolfs down rabbit sh&t like it was swiss chocolate. Puppies are loads of fun.

I've found 2-3 prime deer areas near my house, all because my pup found the fresh piles of deer dukey and started helping her self to them! I know where I will be opening day this year.

Nate I've had several pointers do it,most recently a notorious pointer bitch-solution LION COUNTRY SUPPLY,PA.-"forbid" is the name of the product-1-800-662-5202
 
She is getting better about it and I/we have been on top of picking up the poop as soon as the dogs are done out there. I've also taken her out on the leash and when she gets close to some doo-doo, I will yank the leash and tell her "Leave It!" I lit her up on the e-collar once and that made an impact too. Just need to keep on her. I guess this is a common problem for some breeds, pointers especially. I think they have ADD!
