Question for the Camera Guys

I bought a new camera at christmas and it is a huge upgrade for us. (I still have my pentax k1000! May even fool with an adapter for some of the old lenses!!!!)
The new rig is a Rebel EOS xs. It came with an 18 to 55 IS lens but I would like to get another for my wife's birthday. I am looking for a longer lens, and do understand that the pro level ones with IS are out of the question due to dollars.

Any thoughts?

Not against a non Cannon if the picture quality is there.

This is going to take a lot of kid and dog shots and I dont expect to be getting flying duck stills like Al or Garry.

Thanks in advance.

I would say look on ebay/Craigslist etc .... get the 100-400L It is versitle and a great lens... otherwise 70-200 2.8 ....

I's suggest the 70-200 L with IS in 2.8 and get a 1.4 teleconverter also. You'll then have the same range as the 100-400, still have autofocus with the TC on it, and it your need inside shooting the 2.8 will suit you exceptionally well.
