Question for the New England guys...

I have been wanting to try some grilled lobsters. I searched on the internet, and there are a large number of places to order, but was wondering if someone else had some personal advice.

This is the one dealer I was most interested in dealing with. Are these prices in line? I've never had them shipped before.

Prices look decent...

I like to steam the lobster, if you do them on your grill that grill is going to smell like dead fish the next day. I put 2-3 inches of water in the bottom of a steamer pot, then the pot with the lobster goes on top. If you dont have a steamer pot, you can use any kind of wire mesh (or something similar) to keep the lobsters out of the water. If the lobsters are in the water and boil you get a lobster full of water when you open it up...

You do realize that those babies taste best after a good day sea duck hunting in Maine. Just think, you save shipping costs that way too. :>) :>)
 
I checked a couple on this end, Bayleys.com and Portlobster.com...Looks like you have pretty good pricing. Enjoy!
Can't help you on the grilling, I always either steam or boil them.
 
Looks like a fair price to me. My recommendation is that if you want a good lobster, get a small one, 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 pounds. One of those is plenty of meat for a meal for one.

Hard shells are a lot better than soft shells, but they'll be a bit more expensive and a bit more work. But more meat per pound, and it's better meat. If you dealer can't or won't tell you whether he's shipping you soft or hard shelled lobster, find another dealer.

For grilling, I like to split them in half between the eyes with a sharp knife, brush with lime juice and butter or olive oil, and set flesh side down on a hot grill. It's easy to tell when the tails are done-the meat will be firm rather than soft. The claws take a little longer.

Steaming or boiling is a lot easier, just as tasty, and healthier to boot. Save your arteries and serve with a slice of lemon or lime instead of butter.
 
The prices don't look that bad, but I would not cook them on the grill. Boiling or steaming is the way to go.

I haven't jawed with them in some time but I know they run 9 lobster boats. They are customers of ours (decoys) and we ate there several times while out for Lobsterfest some years ago. They're not far from where we had the fest and they are great folks to deal with. We've had lobsters shipped from them and been very pleased but I don't recall their pricing.

You've never met Steve, have you.

Steamed, on a deck overlooking saltwater, with an ice cold premium "hoppy" brew. Preferably with 2# pile of steamers or little necks on the side, and LOTS of melted butter.

When I cook them at home I use the steamer pot and go around 12 minutes a pound or so, so for pound and a half, around 20 minutes.

the price is way off this summer. Its a good time to buy. The market price is low enough to let you buy at a decent amount and with shipping you can still enjoy the meal.
I like steamed but grilled is fine too. Split in half like was mentioned. Dont sweat the light meal idea. At this price enjoy the butter if you like. I only dip the claws but thats me. I come from a family that eats the whole thing, guts and all.......

Lobster stew is my fav. but you prob. need to live closer to make that happen.
If I read the price right 14.99 for a pound and a half lobster that is OK.

$5.99/# at the grocery store last week and if you make the seafood counter your first stop, they'll steam it for you for free and will be ready by the time you want to check out......Can't get "real" lobster rolls at the grocery store, but the lobster "salad" rolls are still pretty good for $5 when you were too lazy to make a sandwich in the morning.

I'm getting hungry.
 
Like I said, price is down and market is flooded with supply, but grocery store stuff aint going in a box overnight UPS, so if you live to far for the truck to make your local grocery you have to pay a shipper.
 
Steve, How have you been just had two stints put in a few weeks ago and bac k to working at CABELA,S. I have a new small munsterlander that was shot over for the first time last monday. I have a large back log of carving to do as I was not felling to go for a long time. feels go to be able to run around in the woods with my puppy. If you have a copy of the Shooting sportsman send it up to maine and I'll sign it to go with your brant.

Glad to hear you are doing well. It is amazing how stent technology has evolved since I've been practicing.

When I was in college, my best friend had a munsterlander, and it was an amazing all purpose dog. They hunted grouse over it quite a bit, but it was an amazing retriever for ducks!!

I believe I do have a copy of the magazine. Let me dig around. Also when you get caught up in your orders, I'd still like to get a scaup from you.
