Question ?? Hunting Quincy Harbor, Mass.

I'm looking to make a road trip up to Mass for some Eider/Seaduck Hunting.
I'm not familiar with the area, however I have been hunting big water for several years. I have a truck camper and 17' TDB to hunt from..
Basically I'm trying to reach out to a fellow seaduck hunter that can give me some direction.
1-place to launch
2-place to leave the truck overnight (like a marina lot, I'm sure there quiet this time of year)
3-place to set up the rig

We are looking to do this in the beginning of January

Thanks ....sorry Steve

Regarding "using real names"....somehow you slipped past the registration process.

Follow the simple rule of the site and I'm sure you'll get some response.

I think you should speak with a guy named mark who has some kids with cowboy names up there... he is the top hunter in the area.

Brian,

There is a public launch in Weymouth off Neck Road and another off Sea Ave in Quincey. My experience has been that Quincey harbor is home a mostly old squaw and some scoters. Only hunted it a few time but didn't see many eiders. Go due north to Boston Harbor to find eiders.

You can also launch in Winthrop just north of Boston harbor and find divers and more. I'm sure others have had different experiences but these are mine. Winthrop launch is a bit more out of the way over the road but is an excellent place to go.

Good luck,
Bill

Thanks Bill.. I've been looking at the Winthrop area you spoke about. I was wondering if you could give me a little more detail.. The extra travel is not an issue for me. I was just wondering where I could launch (the Winthrop launch?), and a good place to set up ..I see a launch north of Coughlin Park, but I notice it's close to Logan Airport. Can You hunt near the Airport??
If it's not a problem could you pls e-mail me a little more detail mjg971@optonline.net
Thanks for the initial response....

Take the Revere Beach Parkway to Winthrop Parkway to Winthrop Shore Drive (all one road - no turns) You will see multiple streets on your right and ocean on left. Take any passable right to Shirley Street and follow a short distance South until you see Winthrop Yacht Club. Can't miss boat launch with large parking lot right beside road.

You won't be able to hunt right off Logan Int'l airport but it won't be far away. Launch and stay left outside channel. You can hunt along Deer Island (waste h2o plant0 all the way into Boston Harbor) Once in Boston Harbor, you can continue South and head towards large windmill to Quincy harbor. Windmill is not lit - so you won't find it before first light. Be careful at low tide - sandbars - channel markers are out year round. Usually anchor surrounded by decoys but there are some small islands if you are inclined in Quincy. Kinda rocky though.

Thanks alot Bill
Have you hunted Massachusetts Bay near Point of Pines?
I see there is a ramp just to the north of the white Oil/Fuel tank (off Blossom St Ext).
Looks like the Lowlands Park area seems like a possible place to hunt??

I'm just trying to go further North looking to target the Eiders. We have a ton of Oldsquaw-Scoter-Buflle Head etc.. So I'd rather travel further for the right bird

(I'm using MSN Maps as a guide)

Funny you should mention Blossom St Ext. - That ramp closed in early November. The city of Lynn is completely redoing the launch for commercial use. Don't know what impact that will have next year. Lynn Harbor is one of my favs for eiders but there are few around right now I'm told. I haven't hunted much in the last month. My dad is ill. Point of Pines is mostly divers but puddlers can be found further up river. We slammed eiders at the end of Oct - expect to try again soon out of Nahant launch - not the best launch because of debis that is a hazard at low tide.

I didn't know that the city closed that ramp. Thanks for the info. I must have been there last right before they closed it. Hopefully public access to recreational boaters is not restricted in the future as that is a much better ramp than the state ramp nearby. The ramp on the causeway has to be the worst boat ramp in the state.
