Question on gun cleaning

A friend of mine just got an older AR-7 survival rifle from his grandfather. It sat in a closet for 20+ years and the action is really gummy and slow moving. We took it all apart and the old oil is like syrup it's so thick. What's the best way to clean off all this old thick oil/grease? Also can I use light sand paper on the inside of the receiver to remove some crud and smooth it out. Thanks for the help.

Chris,

Try some CLP. Soak it down good, clean and lightly oil. We have a lot of fun with our AR7's. I have one that is dedicated to my backpack and comes on every hike and camping trip. It's a fun little gun that is also a fairly good shooter for what it is. Watch the front sight. They move easily so a little dab of silicone or glue to hold it in place is a good idea. Just be careful when you slide the barrel back into the stock. That is where the front sight is usually moved.

I am sure you will get a lot of different answers. Hot soapy water is one way then blow dry. I use automotive brake cleaner to removed gunpowder and grease on my pistols. Degreaser will also work.
Then I wipe down with brake free which you can buy at any gunshop.

Hoppes cleaner with the good ol tooth brush. Brake cleaner is great, but care must be taken that you lubricate the gun carefully. Break cleaner dries everything. Wear goggles...
As far as rust, remove the stocks and soak in oil. Use 0000 bronze wool and rub lightly, it will come off slowly. Keep repeating this, it's not a race. Bronze wool won't ruin the bluing.

Breakfree CLP...cleaner,lubricant,protectant,...works wonders
We also use it to protect the duck guns from salt

Thanks guys I wanna get her all cleaned up and out to the range and see how it shoots. It's a neat little gun that it all comes apart and stores in the waterproof floating stock.

Chris,

That stock is not as water proof as you may think. It will float then it will start to take on water and sink. Watch the butt cap. It comes of easy. I made a sling for mine that holds the butt cap on and makes it easier to carry. Take all the parts out of the stock, put the butt cap on and place it in your sink. You will see tiny air bubbles escape from seams in the stock. Just put a dab of silicone in those spots and you can improve on the waterproofing.
We have a lot of fun with out little AR's. They also shoot pretty well using cheap ammo.
