Question regarding the new guys on our forum: is it the virus?

Brothers old and new,
All of a sudden we have an influx of new guys. That is terrific!

I am curious: why now, in the spring, 2020 as opposed to some other time?

Not sure I've seen this many new guys join in this short period of time.

Is it the virus or has Eric got some advertising and promos we don't know about?

:)

Great to have the new people. Long live our sport!

Larry

Eric has been hitting it hard on Instagram. A great way to reach the younger generations of our sport.

I?ve visited the site before looking for sneakbox building info but the Instagram posts got me interested to see what else you all had to offer.

Whenever I see questions on other forums that I know the folk here can answer, I will say come visit duckboats and ask your questions here...

Not sure how effective it is though.

I've been actively utilizing the Instagram account duckboatsdotnet to recruit new members, which is pretty much like swimming against the tide.

A lot of internet forums have died at the hands of social media including FB and Instagram. More died at their own hands by selling out to companies that generate revenue by pushing ads everywhere they can. For example imagine every picture posted having an ad blocking it until you clicked on it along with rotating banners at the top, bottom, and/or sides of the page. I would never let that happen here, but other forum owners sold out. I can't say I blame them if they saw the writing on the wall and knew social media was going to be their end anyway.

With today's mobile devices being the primary means of keeping up, and the ease of posting video and pictures, the young are not accustom to using forums as a resource or belonging to online communities such as this place. So I have been spreading the word on IG in hopes of getting people to come back or discover the amazing wealth of information we have and the incredible talent base that participates here on a daily basis, not to mention the sense of community we have and the perks of being apart of it.

I do feel like I'm swimming upstream trying to recruit people from IG to here when they are flocking to IG every hour of every day, but I know there are people out there who would like this community and we'd love to have them so I"ll keep at it.

Eric

Eric,

Keep at it.

The "new normal" could be a lot more retro, than many folks can wrap their heads around.

Best regards
Vince

I recently purchased another duck boat and actually checked out a few post threads on here while trying to figure out what exactly my "new" boat was, then posted on a layout boat Facebook page and was told to check this site out and post here.
Great site, amazing amount of great posts and a great resource!
Love it, thanks

I am getting into waterfowl and looking to build a boat. I happened to stumbled across it on Instagram and figured what better place to learn than some experienced guys.

We are happy to have you guys on board. This site has been around for 22 years and this forum database goes back to 2006 so there is a lot of info in the archives in addition to the folks that hang out here daily.

Eric

A friend was the reason for my checking out the site to begin with. I became a near instant lurker because of the wide variety of topics allowed for discussion, far more than just duck boats. Also, Eric's "real names only, please" was so refreshing from other forums and the "secret squirrel" names. that some members of those forums hang onto even in private PM's to the point of refusing to give real names.

Once I saw signing up for a membership was OPEN, I ceased lurking and signed up...Glad I did.[smile]

Thanks for the feedback on the real name policy. Some people really take exception to it. I wonder if they have a FB account :) It just seems to work here.

I belong to many boat building and Duck Boat Facebook Groups. Occasionally someone on those groups will have questions about duck boats or building duck boats so I send them this way.

Eric has been doing a fantastic job on Instagram stirring up the interest with the old classic posts, thats the type of transition needed for forums like these. Looking forward to the growth!

Thanks for the compliments Anthony. Going through old posts and prepping old photos for IG has been enjoyable. The amount of info and pictures in the archives is staggering. There are over 40,000 pictures on the server starting in 2006, and more uploaded everyday. I find myself researching the old posts just so I know the context of the pictures that I find on the server and run across all kinds of cool things I'd forgotten or missed the first time around. There are some amazing photographers on IG that upload incredible quality images (like Anthony!). I'm not trying to compete with that. What I am doing is showing a wide range of topics and projects with a good dose of historical imagery mixed in. I still think at the end of the day folks like to see what is being created by hunters in their shops, past and present, and people find ideas and inspiration through it.

Eric

I joined looking for a layout boat plan and general research into getting a duck boat that will suit my kids when they are old enough to hunt (4 more years). That was just before the virus started. Now I find myself scouring the archives while working from home to stay sane.
