If the motor plate is to far below the transom, will this cause the boat not to plane. I have a 12' sneak boat and when I bought it the man told me he used a 9.8 and it would move along fine. I can't get the boat to plane.

John,

The answer to your question is, Yes most definitely.

(A) If the motor is too low it will greatly increased drag, thus effectively increasing the horse power required to get up on plane.

(B) If the motor is too low it negatively alters the thrust angle. Even with the motor in the otherwise correct tilt position. The prop will be so low in the water column that it will tend to drive the stern of the boat deeper and not allow the boat to come up on plane.

Could the problem be that you have too much weight in the rear of the boat? Try moving the gas can and decoys to the front.

Also, are you sure you're boat hull is designed as a planing hull? if it's a displacement hull, that could be the problem.

Displacement hulls do not plane, they push their way through the water like a large ship does. They handle rough sees better but are slow. They have certain "hull speed", once you reach that speed, adding more HP does nothing. Original BBSP hulls are displacement hulls.

Planing hulls, which includes most modern hulls, ride almost on top of the water.

Carl, Thanks for the info, I researched displacement hulls and in fact thats what I have. Although I miss quoted the length it is 14 feet long. I like the boat but it's forty minutes to the spot I hunt. I would post a pic but I don't have photo shop to make the pic's smaller. Thanks again John

A real displacement hull will actually slow down when you get to bow/wave speed...then it takes over powering to get up and over that. You can feel it if you take it up gradually. At that point, the motor is trying to push the boat over it's own wake.

John,
I think you found what you wanted, but a displacement hull usu. has rounder lines under and esp in the back of the boat. Very good for seakeeping in rough water but not meant to plane. The best planning hull would be a flat like a table but these pound at speed so a compromise is usu. made with a v shape to the flat back to help in rough water.. but the steeper the v the more HP to push. Look at a Regulator SW fishing boat. 250 hp works fine. Good luck.
