racing sneakbox into hunter

Hey charlie, boat looks like it would be a good hunter. As long as the hull dosent have any major rot to deal with. Wouldnt be that difficult of a job either

Charlie, how do you imagine hunting it? As a traditional sneakbox, it will be harder to hide, it is significantly larger. Pulling it off the mud will be impossible. The centerboard case is large, nearly 3ft long and typically is in the cockpit. I suppose you might hunt 2 guys side by side, rear facing as is traditional? If you removed the centerboard trunk, and discarded the sail rig, what have you gained? A low garvey would work better? I have toyed with the same thoughts, bid on a couple when I saw them, but would likely restore it as a summer sailer.... though I have been thinking about a melonseed build in the future, and I suppose they would hunt similar....though I would build the melonseed with a daggerboard, and that would be placed much further forward than a sailing sneakbox centerboard case.

What were you thinking in how you would use it? Curious.....

No rot that I can tell. I think it needs some painting n maybe re fiberglassed. It's a pretty boat Dave and Im considering restoring her for sailing. Otherwise I would use it to hunt 2 guys in which case I would considering cutting the centerboard trunk and closing the cockpit in more. I think I could get her on and off the sedge just have to watch the tides. Or hunt broadside to sedge at times. The stern sits out of water quite a bit. You should be able to see the water line in the pics. I think I will need a longshaft motor.

I had a friend who coverted a sail boat to a floating blind type boat.
He cut 3 feet off the rear and put on a new transom,it worked very well for him

I don't know how to I.d. the boat Jim. I was thinking it was a beaton's box was told it was too deep and maybe a Perrine. I didn't think of Sam hunt. I not much of a sailor but I guess I could add it to my list

I am considering getting a sailboat, then huntingout of it on the rare occasion that I need a displacement hull.

sounds like a bbsb or similar is what you need

But I would like to sail as well. I seems easier to paint a sail boat open water gray than to add a center board and mast to a bbsb. Although, a melonseed is my real goal. I just don't have the time to build one within the next year.

Check history of bbsb. They were built for hunting. Powered by sail. It's not difficult to find one with a centerboard still. I have one it was built in 2007 by bob fricke. What other sail boat will perform so well for hunting?

I am indeed aware of the capabilities of the BBSB. I missed Zach's bbsb for sale in Seattle as I had to go out of town. However, I wouldn't be able to sail with my son and wife in a 12' bbsb during the summer as they are too small. Is a melon seed big enough for 2-3 people? I don't think it is. I would like to try out sailing in the warmer months as it looks like fun.

I have noticed that most of the commercial small sailboats do not have the great lines of a round bbsb or melon seed. While I am sure they sail as well, I would much prefer graceful curves of a traditional bbsb. I may need to build a slightly larger one to get what I want. I am in the middle of a decoy carving apprenticeship until next July and can not devote anytime to a boat. Hunting season will quickly be here and I will have even less shop time, as it should be. Maybe next year.
