Raising the Transom

So I looked and looked for a motor on craigslist and never found one that was a short shaft in my price range. After 6 months of searching twice a day and missing out on 2 motors my wife and hunting partner and father all convinced me to just go ahead and buy a new one. I chose a 25 hp Etec. The kicker is I bought a long shaft because I knew that is what I would want on my next boat and the motor should out last my boat. So then the project began to raise the transom. Here are the pictures. The motor should be in on Monday. I can't wait to get it on an see how she works

neil, nice job...bolt the moter on and your off. I'd use a safty rope till you see how the new transome hads up/ just my 2$

What type of boat is it?

Phil, I like the idea of the safety rope. I am also putting a BA-130 jackplate on there too so the motor will hang even farther off the back off the transom putting more stress on it. As far as what kind of boat is it. I designed and built it, but I will say that it has a striking resemblance to a devlin snow goose.
 
What are you up around 22" now?
with a flat bottom like that I set my short shaft at 17" and I find it good,
no cavitation and it bite well.
I guess with the jack plate you can adjust any way you'd like it.

It's at 21" right now. there is about 3" of adjustment on the motor for the bolts and then the jackplate has a 3" rise about 1" with the bolt pattern. I got a the Break away one from CMC BA-130 to protect the motor and the transom from when I hit bottom. I have always just not locked my motor in the down position so it would kick up. I got the auto trim on the Etec so there will be no give when I hit. No matter how much I try I hit stuff. I hunt bays and rivers so water level is alway changing and the bottom is always moving. I'll post up more picks once the motor is on. The big question still out there is to paint or not to paint the motor?

I can't agree with you more I have given my buddy crap for years about not painting his motor. I have had intentions of paining it the whole time and then for some unknown reason I thought maybe I don't want to paint it. All logic went out the door. Its a duck boat. Thanks for putting it into perspective.
 
neal, just a thought motor wt and torque are going to pull on center span of raised transom. prop push forward pulling back on top of transom to plane boat. you mite think of putting a structural knee center of transom to deck and or to hull. nice job rick
