Red breasted Mergansers

I just got my first RBM drake the last week of the season this year. It's going to John Barton when he finally does the other ones he has from last year...lol...We saw you over there when I was dropping off my pintail back in early January maybe? me and the old man were there.

Nice cameo by a pair of Old Squaw hens.

I have a question about the grey section on the side of the drake's body. . . is that part of the prime plumage or is that a sign of moving towards an eclipse type plumage?

Chad~

That grey on the sides is finely vermiculated - part of the full nuptial plumage.

Very timely! I have a specimen from my LI hunt - and plan to carve a "mantel piece" Shelldrake soon - thanks for all the reference material (but I can never decide just how to do that hairy headdress.....)

All the best,

Michael - Enjoyed the videos that you have posted and found my way to you site. I do not carve but really enjoyed watching you paint a brant.
