Red dog injury

Looks like red dog has an infection between his toes from a possible puncture wound or grass seed. It has abscessed and I was able to drain it considerably by applying pressure. It looks to be pretty well drained and I thinki I got most of the pus out.
I am not a DvM. I do have a basic knowledge of dog medicine and treatments for common injuries.

Last time we had this issue, Ol' Alex had an obviously painful paw that did not drain and we had the vet punch a hole from top to bottom and irrigate it for about a week.
Since Red dog's Abcess was open and I was able to drain it, I am hopefull that it will resolve with antibiotics and some soaking in warm soapy water.

I reckon he's abotu 60 lbs, so I am giving him 750mg of Cephalexin about 3 times a day. Looks like it is wells suited to this type of injury.

I am going to go home later today and check him, and if it looks like it is not still draining and resolving further by morning tomorrow, we'll get him to the vet.

I only saw him express discomfort momentarily last night and today he started licking at it (because it was draining on its own already.)

Anyone think of anything else I should watch for? I believe I am on the right path with him, but value your input and experience in this matter too.

Best,

Todd and the Red Dog

What Jim said. I'd apply topical ABO as often as you thought of it. Dogs will lick it off easily. Wouldn't hurt any.
Good luck.

Todd, I love the Red dog stories and it saddens me to hear that your boy is injured. I think he needs a corn dog or two!!!!! He will certainly work it off. Trip.

Todd,

Soak the foot in warm water(as warm as he can stand it) and Epson salts for 10-20 min a couple of times a day. It is very effective at drawing out the pus and getting puncture wounds to drain. And continue with antibiotic.

Good luck,

Matt

Well, I went home this afternoon and checked out the red dog.
Looks like the abscess is nicely drained and seemed to be considerably less tender when I palpated it (the red dog didn't show teeth this time.)

I took him for a walk in the grass and threw a couple of dummies and didn't let him dig at all.

When we got back, i had him stand in the tub and washed it with hot water and antibacterial soap.

Then i put a big blop of triple antibiotic on it and made him wear his cone.

he looks to be well on the mend,
Should I continue the antibiotics for about 6 days?

that is what I am thinking.

Glad he is doing well Todd. I would keep him on the keflex for at least 7 total days.
Always enjoy your pics and stories!

Brian

how/where do you get antibiotics without going to a vet? I am sure this is an ignorant question, but i'll admit to not being raised on a farm.

Kris, I get them overseas. When Anya goes to Thailand to see her sister, she picks up lots of medicines for common stuff and we just save it back home, since you can get most "nuts and bolts" meds from the pharmacist. Probably that way in Mexico, and you could porbably order the meds from canada without a Md Visit.
