I dont have any experience getting title and registration for home built boats. I remember hearing 1 time that boats need a coast guard or marine police inspection or something. Im a long way from that point but I also dont want to get into this and find out I have a boat that cant be registered.

Naytep,
Call the NJ State Police to make an appointment to have it inspected ( bring all your receipts to prove you built the boat ). They might come to you , or you have to go to them . The NJSP will give you a certificate to take to motor vehicle and they will issue you a registration for the boat.

Have you been through the process? Are they looking for anything in particular? They are not marine architects so I assume they look for gaping holes and basic requirements such as nav lights

They are just looking to make sure it was not stolen . The trooper who came to me , looked it over and took a look at my receipts . and that was it.
