Hey all, I thought I'd post this up. I had to have Remington set up a service request for my new Remington 887. Since sending the gun to a service center I received word that there is a recall on this model. If you have one of these you might want to check out the serial number to see if you should contact Remington.

This link will allow you to input your serial number to verify.

Remington sure is in recall rut aren't they. After much fanfare and anticipation for the R51 pistol - less than a year later it's a full recall. The model 700 - one of the most prolific rifles since 1945 has, apparently, potentially serious safety issues with it's trigger group - that they have know about all along. And now this - doesn't inspire my confidence in the company.

Very sad indeed. I also have (4) 870's from the 80's and 90's with no issues at all yet the newest a 20ga I bought for my wife about 10 years ago that won't eject! She doesn't shoot it so I haven't messed with it.

Mine isn't listed in the recall but it does jam with every pump. I hope this isn't a prelude to the firing pin issues.

Remington had a great gun, sold around the world, the 870. Tried another gimmick again, 887. Tried it before it was released for sale. Shot a half box of shells through it and gave it back to the Rep. Explained what I thought about it...
Still have my 870's...

Same here!!!

I still have my original Wingmaster I bought in 1972. Top selling shotgun of all time. I've owned as many as 5 at one time. I have 4 now including my original Wingmaster. Practically I carry two 870 Waterfowlers to every hunt and love them. They fit me like a glove. I'm afraid if I ever went to a semi-auto, I'd shuck the forearm right off it...

Don't try to fix or improve what ain't broke... Pat

870 Wingmaster is a classic, as are the old 1100's. Keepem clean and they always work. My old 700BDL was recalled years ago for the safety issue, I never had a problem same goes for it keepem clean.
The model 31 was one of the best pump "Shoot Guns" ever made...

When I go to a gun shop, large or small, the first place I go is the used rack. For me that's where almost all the good shooters are, due to the aging of hunters there is more quality than I can ever recall - for a price (many times higher than original price).

Speaking of 870's. Yesterday a customer came to the house with a 870 Wingmaster I sold to him 40 years ago. Was a Christmas present to himself, first new gun. Couldn't get the bolt in, fixed and as good as ever...

I had an 887, it was so bad remington bought the gun back from me.. Bought a benelli supernova (same price) and never ever had a problem.. Cant believe they make this crap gun still! Remington was an iconic company but their quality has gone way down..

Remington was bought out by an investment group/capital management firm/whatever the buzz word is now group back in 2007 or 2008 and maybe that's part of the issue? Not necessarily like catering to stokholders but they don't always manage businesses like a private organization. I know there was financial trouble prior to that happening (widely reported at the time) but that was bound to shake up quality and production decisions when new folks take the reigns and start making "cost savings" in different R&D, production, engineering, inspection, etc departments.

With all that said, we own several Rem firearms (model 700s and 870s) and I wouldn't trade them for a Benelli, Beretta, "insert name" of any kind. They have recently relocated a large manufacturing facility from Ilion, NY to our area and I'm interested to see what their employees think of the company from the inside opposed to our perspective as consumers.

Just realized I provided no value to your problem... but thanks for letting me ramble. :)

I think I got one of the last "good" 870's, bought it new in 2002 and I've never had a problem with it. It's sad to see a formerly great American company in such a steep decline. 2 friends of mine had 887's and neither kept them for more than a season.

Rich,

Glad you were able to get your money back! I will be calling Remington on Monday. I've sent emails to both the service center and Remington for verification that the gun was received with no response. You see when I check the tracking number ups shows its being returned to shipper. That was 5 weeks ago.

Cody...I won't be keeping mine if I ever get it back as well.

Kyle...thanks for the info. I had heard Remington had been sold but didn't know the particulars.

I've had good luck with my 1980's 1100 and my 1990's 870. My dad was determined to trade his 1970's 1100 on a 105CTi but after showing him some early reviews, and handling one that didn't function smoothly, I was able to talk him out of it. I think they only made that one for a few years before throwing in the towel. He recently got a Versamax and seems happy with it so far.

Ilion isn't too far from me. Hopefully Remington doesn't decide to move out any more jobs.
