I picked up a new Tohatsu motor and I would like to paint it with Parker duck boat paint. I tried to pick the stickers but to no avail that is not going to work. As an added bonus there is a greasy film on the motor on the whole outside. What is my best way to approach this task.
I used the heat gun on my 1990 Johnson, which removed the vinyl but left all the adhesive. Acetone make quick work of the adhesive, but also started to take some apint, which was not big deal as I was painting it anyway! Dave
I took the stickers and adhesive off with Mineral Spirits and a brillow pad, piece of cake. Primed with Kyrlon Fusion and used the Krylon camo colors to paint.
3M makes a product called Woodgrain and Stripe Remover. Spray it on the decal/sticker, wait the prescribed amount of time, peel off and then remove the adhesive with any polar solvent. Works well.
They also make a tool that you put on the end of a drill that does the same thing. This works even better if the underlying paint is not vinyl. Rather expensive but it sure works well.
