Repainting and Reflooring my Lund

It's time to do a little maintenance on my old Lund. I will most likely be using MDO board for the floor unless there is a better alternative you guys know of. Paint, I'll get from Lou Tisch as I've always had good luck with Lou's FME paint. My boat has some soft spots in the floor and dry rot in the wood shelf members and front deck. It's been a long time since I refurbished a boat and after an extensive search for affordable vinyl floor covering I find everything has gone up except my income. So I'm here looking for suggestions on what to do with my floor. Back in the day there was a floor paint with sand in it to allow for a firm footing when wet. I can't find any anymore but is there an alternative? What are you guys doing that are refurbing boats. Thanks. BTW my wife tells me my budget is $200. I don't have the heart to tell her that will cover the under floor replacement foam.

I have used play sand just mix it in the roller pan if you think you need a little more grit
just add more sand.

And you listen to your wife? Wuss!!! I just tell mine what it is going to be and that?s it.

I just "skid-proofed" the lid of a rope locker that will do double duty as a boarding step. I had some fine sand from a paint store (30+ years ago) that I sprinkled onto the first coat of paint while it was still wet (and edges were taped). I put a second coat of paint over it the next day.

As it happens, I made the lid from 3/4-inch MDO (with Mahogany lip). I sheathed it with 7-oz 'glass cloth set in epoxy.

If you use MDO, I suggest thoroughly sealing the edges and any fastener holes with epoxy.

I have also used the coarser playground sand for anti-skid. I sealed the AC plywood floor with 2 coats of epoxy resin. The sand was sprinkled onto the second coat while it was still wet. This is a much rougher surface - probably better for gunning conditions. It got 2 coats of FME once the epoxy cured.

The rope locker with the finer sand will also be used as a seat year-round - so a finer surface was needed.

Hope this helps!

Ed, I have used pickup bedliner brushed on, works great. If there is any left do your trailer rails or any other slippery spots.

They also make commercial versions of the anti skid stuff you put on your shower floor. Commercial buildings use this on slip areas and steps all the time. Might exceed your wife?s $200 budget though.

Thanks for the insight guys. Especially you Mark for brightening up my day. I didn't know you had internet service up in the cabin in the woods! Aren't you retired now and driving jet skis or doing something like planting mullet or wild rice?....hehe! Isn't it funny how that works? I just spent over 2k redoing the pool and she gives $200 to revamp my boat. You can bet she won't see every receipt.

Tom, I had the floor in my 14' flat bottom sprayed with bed liner. That was expensive. I've never tried the brush/roll on stuff. I might have to look into that.

Ed,
Being in the marine trade, there are several products out there you can either add to your paint or
Punch holes in the top of the can and use it like a salt shaker. Interlux paint puts out a product called Inter grip. Also Pettit paint puts out there own product. Google Jamestown Distributors(they are marine supply company) they should have what you need.....they also sell premixed deck paint. Personally I paint the deck
Then add the non skid to the wet paint,I apply it on the heavy side. When dry brush off the excess of and you are good to go.

Ed,

It is really quite simple. Purchase a new boat with all the bells and whistles you desire. When she questions the cost and you duly noted budget, tell her only $200.00 of that went towards the floor in the new rig.
