Not a typo in the subject! I have two scull's in my garage that I am trying to replace the transoms. One was just purchased, the other is a few years old.
The removed all the outer glass on the first boat and noticed it was all mat style fabric. It did not appear to have any of the woven fabric on it. The inside has the woven fabric. While I was chiseling the bad ply out, I managed to blow thru some of it. Once I get the inner surface removed and ply replaced, should I use the thicker mat on the outside? I have never used it before, but it seems like it would be difficult to get resin thoughout the material. Or should I use several layers of woven material? I plan on using epoxy resin. Does that effect any thing? How do I get a nice line where I have to over lap at the bottom. The top I am not worried about. That is purely cosmetic. The bottom needs a nice smooth transition so I do not get drag on bottom of hull.
The second boat only has damage on the top edge of the transom. I do not believe the damage goes too far down. It seems to be pretty solid well above the boot. Can I cut out the bad part and replace by biscuiting in a new piece of ply? This boat has much thinner glass, so I can smooth out the repair and it will be above the water line.
Thanks for any input. My fiberglassing experience rates on a level 4 of 10, so all the help I can get is great!
I will try to get photos so you can see the mess I am talking about.
