Rhode Island duck hunting opener

Left the 12 year old Boykin home & took the 3 year old jump shooting potholes. Per normal limited out wood ducks in about an hour. Have to go to a reunion this weekend & depart on a business trip on Monday so this was my only opportunity at wood ducks. After this 4 day early season all duck hunting (except sea ducks) shuts down until late November.

On the positive side the young dog really got it. Saw one hit the water & beelined to it. On the first she didn't see it drop in a weed choked pothole but saw wings fluttering & knew what to do. I dropped the last at the edge of a pond (& she didn't see it). Walking through the cat tails her nose found it quick. All in all the reason I hunt ducks with a dog.

had 2 pretty good shoots...one morning 3 of us shot 8 woodies and one afternoon we shot 3 woodies and 1 teal....had the young dog runnin as well and is a machine...marking extremely well, and reasonably steady....but shes starting to realize what the game is all about and stays looking at the sky and zones in on birds

Took my son with me on Sunday afternoon & he tells me that the dog tenses up as soon as she sees the gun go up, so she obviously "gets it". I tie her in a blind/boat & use a pinch release collar. I'm sure I could get her super steady but not going to bother. A spaniel is just wired a little too tight for me to put the time in.
