RI Trip with Adonis.

As I write this I am torn between wishing that Morton is right now putting the finishing touches on gathering a black duck and a brant to get the skunk off of our turn with the decoy, and thinking he would be smarter to have stayed home and enjoyed a quiet sunday morning with his family enjoying a nice breakfast before heading out for a youth hunt this afternoon.

We had a great host in RI this year and I now see why Andrew is so bummed out to be on the road so much this year. Dave put us on birds in a big way and showed no end to his hospitality. His wife then went over the top and put a real shot across the bow of anyone I know who thinks they know how to make chowder and clam fritters. What a Meal. The fritters were so good I could not even get a picture of one before Wendel ate the last.

Scott brought the goodie bag to the blind from CT and lets just say that it wasnt the 6 muffins I ate that effected my trigger finger at the moment of truth.

This decoy had great company on the hunt with carvers birds from the old days of the DHBP on hand.

The Weather was great and the tide was perfect. Made a new friend on this hunt and we all forced him to sign a paper that keeps him in our group from here on out. Missed having Andrew but understand that in these times work\family has to be first.

Here are a few photos of the hunt. We never "Tripped a trigger", but for me at least it didnt matter one bit. I saw new places, had a great morning with friends and for the first time this season saw some birds in numbers. The weather is starting to co-oporate and the late season should be a good one.

Lastly as man caves go Mortons is a real hit. It has heat, decoys, boats and a great shot at a deer right out the back window.

Steve Sutton would be proud of the Eider sleds he inspired that live there.

PS. Ballard, this picture in the book was so cool I had to take a photo of it. You are one heck of an artist. Reminds me of the first time I saw a Ding picture. Thanks for putting the extra time into it.

Glad you posted Bob... I spoke to Morton today and he told me that he could have shot at a lot of ducks but his fat orange gloves kept getting in his way...

Sounds like you guys had a GREAT time... I'll never plan trips in November & December again... wish I were there.

Andrew

Hunting over Adonis was a great experience for me. It was a chance to meet new friends and explore new areas for me. If we weren't so busy eating those wonderful cranberry muffins Scott brought we might have gotten one of those black ducks! I appreciated Dave's hospitality, especially after 2 bowls of Tracy's chowder and about 8 fritters!. BTW, great pics Bob.

Andrew ,

Leave my fat orange gloves out of this !! We were getting ready to move dkes around when Bob was looking for Photo opts . We had a great time that day !!! I owe Andrew a Chowder and fritter dinner soon . Missed not having you with Andrew , now get all the duck stuff ready we are going next week !!!

these are some really obnoxious gloves!

Dave, what happened??? Did you get tired of loosing camo gloves when you layed them down? Thought "I'lll replace them with some gloves I'll never loose"?

Sounds like a great hunt!

Chuck

Great post, Bob. Enjoyed the reading and pictures as well. Got a kick out of seeing the wood pile all covered to keep it dry.
That has to be fun to hunt over decoys that you make.
Al

Al, Scott and I pulled the wool right over Dave's and Wendel's eyes.
We have them thinking that making decoys makes some sense and both are looking for carving knives to make a bird or two dozen.
It wont be long before they are looking for two b eight cut offs to chop into stool for the rig, out back in the man cave.

Guys ,

I feel that i need to clear up the deal with the gloves !! HAHAHA we use those gloves for retreiving decoys , these are purchaesd from a local comercial fisherman store and are the best thing out there to keep you fingers freezing when the temp dips . We were getting ready to move decoys and the boats so i had them on and got caught when Bob took the pic !! That wood plie is about 2.5 cords of seasoned wood that i use at the house for heat we average about a tank of oil a year still not sure if all the work of stacking and feeding the wood stove is better then paying for oil but at 175 a cord cut and split it allows me to hunt more rather than cutting and splitting wood . John the shed is from Stimpson Marine been up for about 6 years and i have only put to layers of ply top on it , let me know if you need more info on the shed . It was really a great to be out there with great friends . I need to go look for some wood to start carving dekes .

Another great hunt! First off I want to thank Chuck for putting all this together for the site, it's a really nice thing you do for us. It was fun reuniting Adonis with his two black duck brothers that were also carved by Pete Revicki. Pete sure carves a nice hunting block! Thank you Pete for offering him to the site.

Dave Morton made a great host for this years hunt! He used up an untold number of spousal points getting Tracy to make wonderful clam chowder and fritters for us after the hunt. I figure Dave will be doing all the housework for at least a month to get back even. Dave please thank her for me, she did a great job. It was also fun meeting the rest of the clan - who'd of thought someone as young as Dave would be a granddad?

The hunt it self was on Narragansett Bay, RI, a first for me. Unfortunately at the crack of dawn we were off the X for black ducks by about 80 yards. By the time we gave up on pulling them over with the decoys and moved a couple of guys over, the flight was done - D'oh! After that it was empty skies. By 9:30 the tide was dropping off the shallow beach so fast that we couldn't keep the decoys floating and in range of the blind. With the exposed beach and shallow waters the Brant started to visit. They really wanted in and if there hadn't been 4 guys standing 15 yards away they would have dumped in. As it was, they made a few passes, trying to decide if it was worth it anyway. Guess when Brant season opens in RI? The next day - D'oh! Seriously this season has been very poor in southern New England. We are on track to be the warmest year on record and last week we had a rainy day that hit over 60F. The wet warm Fall and great mast crop has the local birds well dispersed to the back waters. New birds haven't come down out of the north and the large bodies of water are almost empty, and this held true for Narragansett Bay too. Four guys and not a shot taken.

Thankfully this was a social hunt and as a social it turned out great! The only negative was that Andrew and his apple pies missed it. Hopefully he was dinning out in some fancy restaurant in Europe. We missed you Andrew even if Dave said Tracy would have had to double the recipes if you were there. We did end up leaving your four cranberry / white chocolate muffins at Dave's house. This years social hunt was expanded with the addition of Wendell and I'm I'm sure glad he joined us. Wendell kept me company and maybe even more important, kept me awake for an hour of the drive each way. Wendell it was good getting to know you, I do plan on picking your brains on the area we talked about having a two boat hunt on. This week's colder weather may actually bring us some birds to shoot. And Bob, well he's just good company any time/any place. Hopefully we'll actually get a productive hunt in together.

It was also a small DHBP decoy meet, as in addition to Bob's & my B&W decoys there were blocks carved by Duane G, George W., Bill Wasson, Tommy M., Ian F., BillE., GaryRI, Bomber, Mike Smyser, & Rich Chmiel all hanging out together with the 3 by PeteR. That may be where Dave started to show some interest in chopping out a few of his own.

What a GREAT day!

Scott

PS: Dave, let it rest, it's the color of the gloves. Real Duck Hunters use the Blue fisherman's gloves. The orange color makes you look like a deer hunter wantabe. Now the man cave - That was COOL! Best!

Dave, the gloves are an improvement... recall when we first met, you were wearing a pink speedo and a camo purse... so you have evolved... Scott, I heard your deeks were awesome out there yet again and Bob... let's face it, Bob is fun at a funeral... most upbeat guy I've ever met... would love to have in a foxhole in Stalingrad in 1941...

Wendell, frankly I'd sue the whole bunch I'm sure you could think of a million reasons...

What a great group. Next year, we'll take 4 boats and set up various places... there is lots of room in Nar. Bay... during brant season.

Morton,
I never heard that story!

As for the suing part, you have it all wrong.

We are going to use Wendel, when the Warden shows up with the FBI, wondering exactly where it is that you have been traveling too any way. Wendel is going to carefully explain that you have just joined our group and that we have no prior knowledge or understanding of the overseas travel that has taken place.

And then maybe just maybe we wont be kept from hunting much longer so we can get a bird or two when they land in the new decoys Dave made for the big hunt.

And after you and Wendel promise the law men that we will split the fritters and chowder and the last three muffins and a Starbucks with them, we can get on over too the man cave to see the latest boat project in the works and discuss the finer points of towing Eider Sleds in a sea way to move to the spot where the birds are landing just like Dave said they would before being convinced that this was the spot.

Scott ,

The wife loves to cook so that lunch was what she loves to do , you are right i will be doing alot of things to make this up to her !! It was our pleasure to make sure you guys had a good time .

Andrew ,

The speedo never did go with the camo waders so i need to trade it in this past year , i plan to auction it off at the next DU event infact any bidders??

Can that be carved while wearing big thick red gloves?

Pink Speedo??????????? Hmmmmmmmmm Now I'm worried. I am planning on chipping at some type of wooden blocks for next year though. Scott, Dave & Bob, I don't think I can make it out until next weekend, unfortunately, but if the weather is right then, maybe we could take a couple of boats for those brant I told you about. Very good spot for bluebills, if they are around, and "longtails".

Bob,
Thanks for the kind remarks and the cool hunt pics. Being involved with the traveler is always an awesome deal.
Happy Holidays and Hunting,
Ballard
