As many of you probably heard George Forman passed away. I think he is one of the most remarkable athletes of my lifetime. Not for his skills, which I'll use an overused term to describe, were awesome. But for the transformation he made as a person. After his career ended he was a boxing commentator. In one particular fight, Lennox Lewis vs. Oliver McCall, the later had a mental breakdown in the ring. You could hear the boos from the crowd and the other analysts questioned the man's heart. George on the other hand saw someone in the midst of a mental health crisis, which turned out to be true, and offered empathy for the fighter. It totally changed the tone of the other analysts. That man was the hardest puncher in the history of heavyweight boxing destroying most who entered the ring with him. Yet all he did in his life after being saved was spread love. His transformation from bully street thug to humble minister working with troubled youth is nothing short of remarkable.
One other note on Big George. When my oldest was ten years old he looked up George's official email address and sent him a note asking some questions about his fights and career. Andrew got a response with each and every question answered. Now I don't know if it was George himself, or someone working for him who replied, but it sure made my son's day.
