Damn you. I've been mentally debating whether, when I get this boat completed in a few months, I'd seek out someone locally to make a dodger for me or whether to try my hand at this piece of the project, too. Now I may have to study up in earnest and make a decision.

How hard is it to learn and do? I have no (zero) experience with such work. Neither, unfortunately, does my wife, so I wouldn't have a teacher or helper.

Henry,
If you can build a boat, you can sew a dodger. Instead of stitch and glue think of it as baste and stitch! Seriously, Sailrite has so many great videos that you will be sewing like a pro in no time at all. This is my first time sewing on a machine and I love it. Don't worry about cost, the machine will pay for itself. Richard

P.S. You don't need zig zag unless you plan on making sails.

Henry,
Yeah, I would just buy now and watch the video later. Trust me, you will love it. You certainly don't want to be the richest guy in the cemetery. With any luck your wife will take it over and run it for you! Richard

Yes, well, I'd like to have a little to enjoy before I get there!

Still have a lot of expenses (trailer, motor) in my future on this boat, and $1k is a hefty chunk for a single job, so I'll need to come up with some projects after a dodger to warrant it, I think. How much are folks paying for dodgers? I can think of all soft cover for layout purposes... what other projects have you found for yours?

Henry,
Tongue in cheek, my apologies. Sometimes my attempts at humor don't translate well with people who don't know me. I think if you purchased your own machine it would come close to paying for itself just in the work you have planned. A dodger as you mentioned, probably a combination layout/cockpit cover. Perhaps instead of old school flapper boards you fabricated some soft side flapper boards like you see on layout blinds. Eric Patterson fashioned some curtains for under the gunnels on his boat. An outboard cover, the list goes on. I personally have several projects planned. A couple years ago we bought a 19 ft toy hauler for hunting remote areas. My wife would like to make the ramp a tented add-on living quarters. Another project is to replace the rotted bird bath cover. A cover for my Yoder pellet smoker. You will find uses especially now that you are retired. Actually my purchase was long overdue. I have been fabricating alot of my own equipment for years doing most of the sewing by hand. Just decided to treat myself because life is short.

I took it as intended, Richard, no worries! And thanks for the thoughts on it. Still pondering.

I'm the worst offender for waiting too long to purchase a tool. My first custom boat cover was $1,000, the second $1,500. Resale is very good on the Sailrite machines. So much so that I elected to purchase new because of the Power B motor on newer machines. Richard

SJ,
If you watch their videos you don't stand a chance. They enable someone with no background in sewing to turn out professional results. Great company to do business with. Richard
