Sandhill Crane Shooting Pictures

Hunting Sandhill Cranes North of Lubbock Texas in December our guide had an opportunity to take three frames of my shot on a Sandhill Crane. Pretty cool, the last photo shows the Crane's feet and wing going down behind my hat.

Hello Mike,

Had a go at crane hunting when I was in texas last year hunting snows. Was not sure it was something i fanced, boy was i wrong. some of the best wingshooting i have experenced, did a lot of it during my hunting trip.. the noise they make that wooden sound is one of the greatest of sounds I have heard.

Hi Fred,
Yes, I did and still have a house in Spokane. I left Spokane in 2003 to take the position of Director, NRA Competitive Shooting Division in Fairfax, VA. Hope to retire and be back in Spokane next year. How are things in Central WA.? You must still enjoy killing a few ducks.

Mike, I guess my old tired mind didn't fail me yet, things are good here and yes I do get out a shot a few birds each season, I'm on my 28th year with the county and plan to retire soon also.

Look me up when you get back to Spokane, The boys and I always have room in the blind for another gun.

I have to admit it is one of the finest tasting birds I have every tasted, I think the term "Ribeye in the Sky" is very fitting.

Thanks for the pictures Scott, looks like you hit the jackpot also. We used stuffer decoys, crane skin over body molds made by our guide, they sure worked well. I have added a picture of the decoys.

Those decoys look the bomb, what a great way to decoy. Those silosocks were I think no go, only had a week with them but just didnt seem to be doing the busniess. wish we had some of yours who knows what we would have ended up with.. and man arnt they good eat.on funny to breast sure not like a goose but good all the same..

How many decoys did he use like that, did he throw the skins over every time or were they attached and perserved in some way.. Am going to post these on to my mate that I hunted with, just out side houston texas.
