Saving the Duck Population one duck at time!

I do not know if I ever posted this picture I have slept since then....So I decided to post...

This was roughly the first part of October in 2008 on the St. Joe River below the dam near IPFW in Fort Wayne, IN...I dropped the BBSB in the water there just to run the motor and check to see if all maintenance work was satisfactory...Changed plugs, lower unit oil, new prop, and etc...I was running the boat up in down the channel in the area when I came up on this duck...It was almost lifeless when I got to the bird...It had a fish hook caught in its left thigh with the fishing line wrapped around its body...It was actually so tangled it could barely keep its head above the water...The bird had lost all of its "oil" sheen and looked water logged or sweated out...I pulled up beside the bird and put in my lap then headed to shore...Cut all the line, clipped the barb on the hook, and removed the hook from the bird...Before I took this picture I laid the bird in my lap...It rested there as if it was my own pet and actually started to preen as I reached for my camera...I took this photo and released the bird on shore...The bird followed me up to my truck as I walked and the girl that was with me shouted for me to turn around and look...The bird stopped beside me and started to preen again...So I continued to walk to the truck...It followed me all the way up the hill...I broke a granola bar I had and fed the bird...It preened for another 30 minutes and just sat down by us in the park by the river...Later a group of birds locked-up in the river and it quickly followed with a small flight to the greeting party...It sure made my day...

Hope you enjoy...

Kristan,
Just reading this short story and seeing the pic has been a great way for me to start my day. Thanks for posting that. I'm glad you took the time to be inquisitive, then to complete the job you set out to do. Well done, young man. Be proud of what you accomplished.

Fantastic story!
This is one thing that the Anti's never "get" about hunters: the fact that we care about waterfowl and wildlife a hell of lot more that most people on this planet.
Why would a duck hunter go out of his way to help one duck during the off season when we may kill 50 ducks during duck season?
Because its the right thing to do and we actually care.

Good gawd Man, that duck has a prettier face than you!!!! No wonder you're single.

Neat narrative, but he left out the end of the story: He was later given a ticket by the Indiana DNR for illegally handling waterfowl......

Good deeds K.

We don't always need to fight the antihunters because deep down we all know that we are good people and care about the animals that we hunt.

Karma.......

Great story! Peta has no idea - what great hunters are out there and the respect they have for all wildlife. Good for you!!!! I don't shoot it unless I plan on eating it!

Kristan. Great story. It reminds me of all the hens I have passed on over the years. Giving a little back to the sport. Loved it.
