She didn't know it but there was a whole bunch of people loving her and holding her as close as possible during that short stay with us. When this little tyke was but 10 days old she was given the name, Mrs. Beaseley aka Mrs. B, which seemed to stick just because it was a perfect name for a perfect female chocolate Labrador retriever. As she sat on her haunches one day looking so cute, you could see that white blaze she had on her chest and yes, it was that tiny patch of white under her chin that caught the most looks. She was affectionately named by Bev's granddaughter and her classroom of 6th grade students back in Wisconsin. Cassie stayed with us for almost a week and there wasn't a day that went by that Mrs. B wasn't loved, held, kissed, squeezed and played with. I think that is the right of a grand daughter and a puppy.
At about the age of 3 weeks after her eyes were open, Mrs. Beaseley got held again, but this time for a good hour one afternoon. We had a lady who had desperately wanted a chocolate female and finally was given the opportunity to pick between two girls. Debbie kept coming back to Mrs. Beaseley because of the way she was; that being her personality, looks, size, and coloration. Everything seemed to fit together just like one of those 1000 piece jigsaw puzzles.
Mrs. B was now over 6 weeks old and being looked at and held by Debbie again. She and her husband had no problem at all driving the 85 miles to come see her. This time there was no doubt in her mind when she picked up her pup. "She is the one I want," Debbie said with confidence, then giving her chocolate a tight squeeze and a long lasting hug. "See you in one week." Debbie and Ron got back in their truck and headed for home.
The following Friday, Debbie drove down by herself. I guess Ron was at a business meeting in New York. As she walked up to our courtyard gate, she saw a happy pup who was already wagging her tail. “Hi, Sierra,” she said. At that very moment, Sierra it was to be. My wife gave this precious package one last hug, handed that soft, cuddly bundle to Debbie and we watched as they got back into the truck and drove away. I did observe Bev wiping away a tear that found its way onto her cheek.

Bev and I knew we had a few days left with Rodgers (remember that Cassie is a Green Bay Packer fan) so we spent as much time as possible with him. He left us on a Tuesday afternoon just before a rainstorm. One doesn't forget a shower when the month of August was dubbed the 10th driest in New Mexico's history. The best news of all that day was that it was the young man's birthday. Owen looked at his pup and the two seemed to melt at the same time. If only I could put words to those emotional moments that in a flash like that of a lightning strike, you see total love being given so freely. Yes, I am speaking not only of the new owner hugging his newly found best friend forever but knowing all too well, that it will be given to the owner in return and many times over in their lifetime together. That beautiful pup will some day be the best looking, the best loved, best cared for dog in the world in his master’s eyes. What more would one want in life? What more could you ever expect?
