Scarfing

Hello gents.

My question of many I will have for sure. Reading some material on how to scarf I see to use 1:8. To make the scarf joint and maybe Im having a blond moment but if I scarf at the ratio how long will that make the joint.

Oh and a second question if I scarf to sheets of 4x8 together how long will the new sheet be, My thinking is you lose some length of the sheets when scarfed together.

Clinton, the length of the joint will be dependent on the thickness of your material. If it was an inch thick, then the scarf length would be 8 inches long. 1/2" stock = 4" scarf.

How thick is your material ?

When I did 1/2" ply at a 1" to 8" ratio it was 4" long per 4X8 board. So when you glue 2 4X8 boards together you lose 4" of length per joint.

Thanks for that info Dave.

The ply will be 3/8 thinkness.

My mind just aint working the math this morning been a very long night of keeping the generator running weather knocked the power out at the house last night.

3/8" x 8 = 24/8" = 3" scarf length. If your foggy from lack of sleep, stay away from the sharp tools for now and get your rest. The project will go better with all your fingers.

Thank you for that info Dave thats just what I needed to know.

Oh yea no working today project aint starting for awhile just getting needed info and making notes is all.

Now y'all are just no fun. What fun is a project without a little blood and perhaps a trip to the ER? I thought that was a normal part of every project?

That's a relief, because if your power was out, and you were unplugging the freezer from the generator to plug in a belt sander to start your duckboat, then you would have taken "the sickness" to a whole new level.
