Scaup banding...

So how does the trap work? Corn under it and they pop up through a cone?

Pretty cool stuff there. Was there a marshall county Iowa DNR guy there by the name of Mike?

Its a pretty good time down there!! I did it last year... The trap is heart shaped if you are looking down from the top, the indented part of the heart has an opening on the bottom, birds dive down for the corn and pop up in the trap. Pretty simple concept that works I guess, my brother was there this year to help just before those guys and got to band quite a few.

Was ther two years ago and they banded 6500 for the week. How the bills find corn in 4 feet of open water amazes me.

That's a standard clover-leaf trap rather than a traditional diving duck trap. The clover-leaf works fine in shallow water, the diver trap works better in deeper water.

Mr. cfinch,

CT is always looking for goose banders. I've helped the last three years in the Hartford area. A number of the site's guys also help out, feel free to contact Kelly Kubik <Kelly.Kubik@ct.gov> to get involved. Banding is done pretty much the last two weeks of June. You can sign up for 1 day or all the days in your travel distance. Since I have to burn vacation, I've just done single days close by.
