Scaup Build

Hello all,

This question goes out to any one who has built the Scaup especially Eric Patterson :) I am planning to build the Scaup as a father son project with my 14 year old, but for the life if me I can’t figure out which plywood panels are scarfed together! Eric says he has 2 - 18' panels after scarfing, but the materials list only calls for 2- 5' by 10'. And, scarfing the 4' by 8’s will only make a 16' panel. HELP... normally I can figure this kind of stuff out but this time i'm stumped.

I bought an 8' and a 10' panel and scarfed them together. You can actually get by with two eight 8' panels if you move the position of the panels on the blueprints and don't mind the boat being a few inches shorter.

Eric,

Were the panels you used the same width? I looked around and could not find any 10' by 4' or 8' by 5' to make a complete panel. Also, do you have any experiences with Devlins Honker?

I used 4x8 (metric) sheets and three pieced it with two scarf joints. I was actually able to adjust layout stations to add 2" to the height which I wanted due to weight of the cargo (me) and barge wakes on the Ohio River.

John just reminded me that Okoume is metric so a 4 x 8 sheet is actually as bit longer that 8' so you gain back some of what the scarf uses up. Like I said before your Acaup may be a few inches shorter but it won't matter and it will be less hassle than dealing with 10 panels or doing multiple scarfs, not to mention cheaper.
