I'm thinking I'd like to make a sissor rig for my boat. Do you guys know anything about this type of rig? Why is juniper wood suggested? Any pictures would be great.

I have read through dozens or more posts on several forums about the construction of scissor blinds. Not one of them mentioned juniper wood. Thinking about it, none mentioned wood at all unless the boat was made of wood. The blinds are mostly EMT conduit with various metal brackets. Some used plastic bimini top parts for various connections and deck mounts.

Whom ever is mentioning juniper wood for a scissor is probably building a nice scissor stand for his wife's sewing table.

This is one of the best scissor blind threads on the intertubes. The diagrams reappear on the third page since the links on the first page broke some time ago.

Ray, keep researching, it's a floating blind that's transported to a site by boat, floated & anchored, allowing the boat to pull out and enter repeatedly to make retrieves. Apparently these are traditional & popular on the NC coast.

Ben, The juniper recommendation is based on the light weight and probably the inherent rot resistance. If you build one take loads of pictures and share them! Thanks for the opportunity to learn about another method of hunting.

Ben juniper or atlantic white cedar is a common readily available wood in NC The boat builders there use tons of it in their boats. Just like yellow pine in the chesapeake or cypress in the gulf area. the local wood of choice!

Sounds interesting as long as you have enough boat to handle the weight while transporting the blind. Based on the above post it sounds pretty simple, but also sounds extremely heavy once the brush is wet in the rain. However, it would be the only way to build a portable natural vegetation brushed boat blind.

Once the boards are brushed physics tells me that they are now extremely top heavy so how do you keep them from turtling? I guess that is the reason to have some kind of dowled/pinned joint across the front piece so that the two brushed side boards fight each other rather than fall over. You would need a strong hinge system on those two corners. Large white oak dowel or non ferrous rod pinned in place.

It is interesting to read in that thread that a 20 foot boat was too small to handle this type of blind.

Based on this photo it would be a real simple system to build. Blends in nicely with the surrounding vegetation.......snort...laugh....;)

Ben,
We use juniper and cedar to cover the blind mainly because it gives good coverage. We us any type of wood to construct the framing as the blind is wiped out by the ice flow.

Hey Ben, I've got a scissor blind diagram somewhere. My buddy had one on his old duck boat. I will see if I can find it.
His was made with conduit & bimini hadware.

Carl that is not what he is looking for. He is looking for something quite different but has the same name. He caught me with it too and I posted the link to the DHC thread with all the diagrams and how to info.
 
Generally my questions only get views and no comments. I'm glad I've finally joined a forum where the guys. Are interested in helping and shareing their opintions. I'll be sure to post some pictures when I get the blind made.
 
Yep, figured it out too.

I was giving him a hard time, Ben & I used to work together before he left coastal Alabama to head back to coastal NC.
I was pissed when he left, he's got a really nice bay boat that I only got to fish out of once. I really liked that boat!

Depends........ But then again you already knew that. Is he sitting next to a place where the emergent vegatation will help conceal his concealement? Is it a Wednesday when he is hunting. Sunny or cloudy, windy or calm. How deep it the water and what is the sunspot activity. Only until we know the answers to these, and a few hundred other questions can we determine if he would be legal with that set-up.
