Seating for the boat what's your opinion?

First a Big Thank You!! For all your help on my choice of plywood for the flooring, I could have made a big mistake!! Now it will soon be time to figure out seating. There were 4 pedistal seats in the boat, but they take up to much area. I could go with 2 but i'm not sure where to put them cuz once I reach the area I want to hunt I would want them in a different area. I was looking at the Cabelas catalog they have a portable boat seat that I can put where I want! Looks very stable and it's camo here's the part # so you can go online and check it out FK-01-6249and FK-01-6081. I could put 2 of the old seats back in the boat and remove them once I get where I want to hunt then use the portable seats. Or can I save myself the trouble and just use the portable seat. Is there an option I haven't thought of that would work in this application?

I use the collapsible fold-up in a bag lawn chairs you buy at Wally world. They are comfortable, go where you want them and you can use as many as you need and they fit behind the blind on the boat. If we get out on an island, we can use them behind a makeshift blind. They are made for old backs!!!! Best part is you are not locked into a particular location on the floor of your boat.

Don,

Back to basics. I'm assuming your Starcraft cockpit sides are not conducive to sitting on, right? How many guys are you going to be transporting? Will you be hitting the bigger waters where you may get bounced around a bit? In rough water you the helmsman need good seating or a good surface to lean heavily on. Your passengers can sit on the floor but you have to see. My immediate thought is to stick with the pedestal seats as they give you good support when bouncing around. They then pull out and store in a fairly small space or you could remove from tube make adapters and use the seats for hunting.

However flat water, a bunch of guys and the pedestal seats may well get in the way but they could simply be left home those days. Do be aware of recommendations from guys with cockpits and low sides where they can sit when running and then use collapsible seats and ammo boxes once they've arrived.

Best,
Scott

I would use the seats with the highest back that you can afford and fit where you need them. Purchased some Cabelas high back seats a couple years bacn and it sure has made a difference in the comfort level during sitting for a few hours at a time.

Don, I've been scheming: If your keeping the remote steering, how about a fold down seat in front of the helm? Hinge at the coaming and a hinged support to the floor. Simple sturdy and folds down out of the way when you arrive. Make from wood or aluminum. If aluminum, cover with a material that you won't freeze your wet waders to. (Well that's Steve's story and I won't wreck it). It would even be practical to mount one on either side of the cockpit for a guest seat.

Think out of the box!

Don,

If you want fairly stable but moveable seating, here's a suggestion. Build a wooden box out of 1/2" or 5/8" plywood with a removeable cover. Drill a hole in the cover and mount a pedestal seat base on it. Then get a standard boat seat and attach a pin-style mount on the bottom that fits into the pedestal base on the box. You will have comfortable seating in your boat, storage room in the boxes, and you can move them different places on the floor to set up for hunting. You can make the boxes whatever dimensions you want for optimal height and stability.

I would also suggest foldable chairs. You can move them where ever you want and have as many as you need. I am thinking of the medal ones. Look for them at a yard sale or buy new at fleet farm ( the mans store) Not lawn chairs too flimsy.

Rick I'm not sure I understand your idea you want me to mount a pedistal seat base on the top of the box then put a pin style mount that fits in the base on the box? So if I understand you right The box will be on the floor then there will be a pedistal that has a seat attached correct? It dosent sound very stable to me, but maybe i'm not seeing this the way you are. Can you explain it once more?

The seat goes right into the pedestal base, which is mounted on the box cover. You don't use a pedestal at all, but the seat will swivel just like a pedestal mounted seat. Is that clearer?

Put one of these on the bottom of the seat.

And one of these on the top of the box.
