Seeing Double

In 17 seasons of hunting waterfowl I had exactly one band to my credit, a black duck I shot when I was in my early teens. That changed this afternoon with my quintessential NJ coast limit of two brant and a black duck. The two brant just happened to both be double banded. One was a single and the other I picked out of a group of six after seeing silver on its legs. This is why it pays to take birds at <20 yards!

Craig, that is fantastic. Are they reward bands? If not why are they double banded. Congrats on breaking that 17 year drought. You did it in great style. By the way, that is a dandy looking black duck.

Wow that's crazy! Congrats. I have shot around 40 brant in the last 3 years and got one band. I thought that was pretty good. A friend of mine got a double banded one 2 years ago. I have been trying to only shoot them feet down in the decoys this year to make it a little harder and try to get another banded one.

Thanks guys. I just looked up my certificate from my last (and first) banded bird, I shot it (a black duck) in 1998.

Not sure why no reward band, figured they might not do them with brant. Interestingly, both bands on each bird were put on the same day, this past July in Nunavut Canada. Probably a few more bands out there in the area I would think...

Congrats on the bands. Nice pictures.
In my first or second year of hunting I got a banded Canada. In the about 27 years since then I have not seen another banded bird at all. I hope that someday I break my slump with as good of a day as you had.

Tim,

He is my band story.

Hunting pheasants with my lab Jack about 4-5 years ago. Had a large flock of Canadas fly over me and land in the back pond. Jack and I walk through the woods. I take off my orange and put two steel shots into my over/under. There were probably 200+ canadas in this flock. I released Jack to flush up the birds. I picked one out and fired once but the bird that I was shooting for didn't fall. The one below it did.(damn rising targets). Jack picks up the bird and brings it back.

This was my first ever shot at a waterfowl of any sorts. Fired once. Bird below the one that I shot at fell and I get a band. The rest they say is history........and I have yet to get another band. I know guys 20-30 years and no jewelry.

Congrats on yours Craig. I have some nice spots for brant so hopefully I get one as well.

Thanks for the info, that is definitely what it is, one is obviously a different material and quite shiny.

Ha ha thanks Phil. I figured some folks might recognize it as there was someone in there this afternoon when I went to go back!

I was surprised I spotted the bands myself. I almost had a heart attack when I realized what I was seeing, I just kept telling myself not to miss.
