September Goose Season

It was short but sweet September season in Alaska. I took my son (30 yrs old) goose hunting. He's never been interested before. He's hooked now. Got his first goose and first Sandhill.
Now he's talking about next season and it's only 1 November.
Hook line and sinker.
Waterfowling is a disease. Once caught, it last for life.

Still laughing..
Last night I heard some God awful noises. I went out to check. My son rents a place out back from us. Here he is sitting in his truck cranking away on a goose call. He had an instruction CD in his disc player and was trying his darndest to imitate the sounds.
I'll get him out in the shop today and teach him. So it begins.

I love this! Good for the young man and even better on you for going out there and wanting to teach him. My pops always yelled at me for making a racket trying to learn. I am the only one in my family that hunts. No idea how I caught the sickness, but I did. I just had this conversation with a good friend yesterday, but I think my love for hunting comes down to trickery. The art of tricking birds to get close enough to harvest or photographed or whatever, is what I fall in love with. So, in turn, if that means learning to use calls effectively or make better decoys, I enjoy that so much more than pulling a trigger. I say it all the time, if I could revive a duck and let it fly away, I would. Like catch and release in fishing. But as much as I love trickery, I also love a good obedient dog work and watching them do what they love, and that means pulling a trigger. I often wonder sometimes if I will eventually put the gun away and take cameras when I get older. I doubt it though, because having a 4 legged buddy there to mess around with is part of the enjoyment still and might feel too lonely not having one there with me. Sometimes theres nothing better than laying in a layout with your eyes shut, waiting for birds to fly again and a cold nose finds your cheek as they lay their head down on your shoulder.

PS... Careful with calls, started collecting and trying at 16 years old. My duck room consists of a few hundred calls displayed now and its always growing. Absolutely love the world of calls, but im starting to fall head over heels for decoy making as well. I see me making shelves and displaying new art in the office soon.

GOOD LUCK to you and your boy, keep sharing pics. I love seeing the younger generation catch the bug.

I hunt with my son and daughter. My granddaughter hunts Grouse but has kind of lost interest. This year my son wanted to hunt with my daughter and I. Worked out nice. My daughter and a nice eating little caribou bull.
Our family loves bird hunting and fishing here in AK. Grandkids are more difficult. I have a couple who love to fish and a couple who'd rather stay home and play video games. What's a grandpa to do?

if it helps your son at all, one of the best instructional videos I have ever watched was Big Sean explain how to blow a goose call. He made a 9 part series, on his youtube, 6 years ago. Here is a link to episode 2 (the cluck) but he took the time to draw out tongue placement and explains every note thoroughly and then how to bring it all together. He also explains how to tune and manipulate reeds in other videos. I could always make noises enough to kill geese, but when I took a summer and watched all of these and spent every day practicing 15-20 min, my calling really came full circle. They are LONG videos, but he really does break it down well.
