My 13 year old lab has taken to running off all of a sudden. We live on the edge of a 300 acre farm, so I've been pretty lazy about watching him when I let him out to pee. Guess that has to change.

I let him out for 3-4 minutes today before work then went to put him and my other labs in the kennel for the day, and he was gone. I drove around the neighborhood, then up to my parents farm to look for him, when I got a call on my cell phone from Giant Eagle, the local supermarket down the road.

Jake decided that he was hungry and walked INSIDE Giant Eagle to have himself a loaf of bread for breakfast!! I guess he was walking up and down the aisles like he owned the place then took two loaves of bread off the shelf and laid down on the floor and ate them.

The manager was laughing her butt off as I tried to pay her for it. She wouldn't take my money and said it was well worth it for making her day!!!

All those years of bringing back your ducks and not being able to chew them up finally got to him! Those loaves of bread paid the price. Trip.

I had grocery store visit once but not that funny. My CML was waiting in the truck while my son and I were shopping. Well we must of been taking to long because as we were checking out the cashier said, Oh my look at that dog! Yep in through the auto doors comes the dog and right up to us in line. He hopped out the slider window that was partially open.

Could be Dave....

He's been a chow-hound since he was a pup. I bet he stole my buddies lunch at least ten times over the years. We'd be out setting decoys and we'd turn around and there would be Jake lying in Dave's blind eating his sandwich.

Lucky he isn't in doggy jail for 5 bucks worth of bread......

....as he walks down the isle he is thinking..."so many choices, so little time, what do I choose?"...

They can be "sneaky", too.

My old lab "Lick" lay on the garage floor watching me breast out three pheasants. Soon afterwards, I stepped into the house and set the small bowl with six fillets on a ledge next to staircase into the kitchen. As I walked up, there was a very slight "slurp" behind me.....so quiet that I wondered for a moment what it was. I looked back at "Lick". She was casually walking at heel. I smelled her breath...nothing. So I counted....there were now five and Lick had that "What!!??" look in her eyes.

So we made another pass....back into the garage wearing an e-collar. Out of the corner of my eye I watched "Lick" return to the stairs and tilt her head toward the bowl for "seconds"......suddenly, they weren't quite as tasty. In fact, she wouldn't even look at the bowl.

Yep Al, he's a regular genius.

I figure he was trying to make himself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, then realized he didn't have any thumbs to open the peanut butter jar with, so he got ticked off and had to settle for plain bread.

Kirk,
Just wait until he decides that cinnamon-raisin bread with some frosting on it tastes better than the regular stuff!

Kirk - That's a riot, good thing the pup didn't dive into the meat counter. Labs do like bread. My last one, a CLF, had a trick where, if she felt there was time and the coast was clear, she pulled the bread drawer open with her teeth (I assume) and then ate a loaf of bread.........leaving only a plastic wrapper.......not even crumbs. The first time it happened we didn't really know where the damn bread went. So they do like carbo loading !

My sons first dog was a black lab who was famous on the island for pulling steaks, burgers, chicken, etc. Off BBQ's. Serious....lived to be 14.5 and the day they put him down, well I'll never forget my sons courage. Now he's got a beautiful Chessie that retrieves like a machine that he trained himself!

Bill,

I think you owe me a steak. I had a black lab steal one off our grill a few years ago out on SI. Guess it was yours. I would like a nice thick porterhouse. Thank you

Iowa.... and it was MY dog... I went into the grocery.. and as we were at the checkout... in come Rex through the automatic doors as we are at the checkout. He nosed open the sliding rear window... and jumped out of the truck and followed us.

I have an aunt from VT visiting and she was just telling us about her dog going to the market. He's a mutt they rescued a few years ago that has bcome an escape artist. When he gets out he heads down the street tp the store stands on the matt for the automatic door opener and heads right for the deli. They have gotten used to him and just give him a slice of roast beef. Then he heads out the back door and continues his rounds.

When I was in college a fellow who lived in my dorm grew up about 3 blocks from campus. His family had a nice yellow lab. Midway through freshman year the dog discovered where his little master had gone to, and started regularly showing up at the dorm entrance. Of course he got lots of attention from all the students. It took him another month to figure out where the dining hall was, and after that he showed up at the entrance almost every meal, collected treats from folks leaving until his master showed up, then followed his master back to the dorm. That dog put on the "freshman 15" in just a few weeks.

He was eventually banned by campus security, which probably saved him from terminal obesity.
