Shore Bird Decoy Books

I am starting to get into shorebird decoys. I am looking for two books. First I am looking for a good book on carving shorebird decoys. The second book I am looking for is one on antique shorebird decoys and their history. Any recommendations?

keep your eye open for Del Herbert's "Championship Service Class Shorebirds (Wildfowl Carving Magazine Workbench Projects)" It is out of print and at times can be somewhat pricey. If you are patient you can find it for less than $80 or at least you could last year when I found one.

FYI~

Not a decoy book but Peter Matthiessen's Shorebirds of North America is the most beautiful book I own - and it's in my shop, always open when I'm working on shorebirds. The paintings of each species by Robert Verity Clemm are both high art and excellent references.

All the best,

SJS

Many may not agree, but Carving Shorebirds by Harry V. Shourds and Anthony Hillman - is worth the price, and a darn good place for a new shorebird carver to start.

Reference - Eastern Birds by Roger Tory Peterson, and Shorebirds A Complete Guide to Their Behavior And Migration by Alan Richards.

Antique Shorebirds - Auction catalogs old and new, and a host of articles, and books. There's tons of info out there to read, and study.

Good luck and have FUN.

Thanks Jode and Steve for costing me some money and bookshelf space. Any and all reference is nice to have

If you really want to give your eyeballs a treat, by the Master. Get Guyette Schmidt & Deeter "The Rowland Collection of carvings by Elmer Crowell". INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!

"Shore Bird Decoys" by Henry Fleckenstein is a good book to add to your library along with all the others that have been mentioned.
If you have an interest in old factory shorebirds, then I would suggest
"Mason Decoys: A Complete Pictorial Guide" by Russ Goldberger and Alan Haid and also "Detroit Decoy Dynasty" by Ron Sharp and Bill Dodge.
