shotguns pumps

I was shopping at Walmart stores for a New shotgun,12 ga. Remington pump, wood laminated stock with anodized barrel cost $339.95 but they had none in stock .The sales clerk showed me a H&R pump all black for less money, the H&R lined up good with the comb drop and ventilated barrel, both weights were at 7&1/2 lbs. I was told that Remington Arms had bought-out H&R co. H&R I believe stands for Harrington & Richards Arms. So I would like to get some input from members of this site. Also both guns have double slide bars, for easy pumping.Because of the fit I'm leaning toward the H&R. Thanks for any and all input.

Cas, H&R has been around a long time. The pump you are talking is a good solid no frills gun. It will serve you well in the duck blind without breaking the bank.

A friend of mine owns one, but he's looking to sell or trade it. He's had nothing but trouble with the extractors when shooting heavy loads.

For that price range, you could easily find a Browning BPS used. They are excellent pumps. I picked one up last month that had sat in a case under the guys bed for 10 years...no rust at all. The bluing is outstanding on Brownings and rust won't be an issue. The Remingtons and H&Rs are a different story.

Cas, I have not handled a H&R, where are they manufactured? I like Remington pump guns. I have no problems with expresses, special purposes, or wingmasters. I have not bought a new Remingtons in 15 years and if I needed a new gun I would probably buy an older used 870. In my opinion the BPS mentioned fits very similar to an 870. If I was a lefty I would be shooting a BPS.

I have nothing against Mossberg 500's and 835's. Very functional for the price. They just dont fit me like a Remington or a Browning.

An older wingmaster is hard to beat, smooth, reliable, their 14"lop 1.5 doc and 2.5 doh seems to fit most shooters. I am a sucker for the old ones and continue to find blued models in great condition.

The H&R are Chinese knock-offs of an 870. Whether that is good or bad, is up to you.

Cas, For that money I would buy an Express, something that has been going since 1950 can't be all bad. Just like Me. I guess it goes to the saying "If it an't broke, don't fix". Day in and day out 870's keep on shuckin.

Please don't buy guns, or anything, form Walmart. Go to a local gun store and get to know the fellows that run it. Then buy a gun from them and keep your money in the community. You will save more money by establishing a relationship with the PEOPLE you do business with. They will show their appreciation to you in the future.

I apologize for having no experience with an H&R but I do know my way around an 870. 870's work, there cheap, and they work, they also rust, but they work, and they're cheap. Expresses that is. You should look around for a used Wingmaster. You could probably get one for the new price of that H&R. I bought 2 used 870 Expresses at a gun show a couple years ago for $300. One became a slug gun and the other a beater duck gun. Both work great and I don't mind if they rust and get scratched up. That slugger is my designated rainy day deer gun.

At least go to a local gun store.

Tom you may have something there, I'm now looking at the 870 express super mag turkey and waterfowl in a camo design.

I would personally stay away from a super mag and buy a 3" gun. The super mag with 3.5" Turkey loads or steel will kill on one end and wound on the other.

Expresses will rust but we coat them with Birchwood Casey Sheath that leaves a protective film on the metal and rust is not a problem.

Mike, Absolutly correct about the 3 1/2 but I have one and almost never shoot the long ones. The option is nice but another thing to consider is the effect of longer forcing cone reducing recoil. I wonder if the longer chamber acts the same way?? Any one out there know about that? We certainly don't need 3 1/2" 12 ga. but need is not the real issue is it? The real point is that 870's are the gold standard of pumps . (that is PERIOD!!)
