Slow day with only two blacks in the boat

We headed out yesterday with SW winds blowing over 30 kts, seas 2-3' on the bay along with heavy fog. I chose a spot that would give us some wind break and a good chance to go for some morning Honkers. As I sat calling I could hear replies off in the distance. I called and called going back and forth with a flock of geese. I could hear them getting closer but could not see them. As they came in for their final approach they flew right over us not more 30 feet above but we could not see them until they were directly over head. They didn't even give us time to line up a shot and they were gone. So we sat there for a while longer and had divers coming and going but not much else. I set up a Canada goose spread on land and a mixed rig of Blacks and Mallards in the water close to the boats.
The cloud cover was just to thick to see thru so we decided to head back to the dock around noon.

It was a slow day but at least we were able to down two Black ducks with nice coloring.

I sent Mocha to retrieve the fist one in the swift moving water. She made quick work of picking it up then swam to shore and devilered it to us.

Not bad for a slow day.

Have a Merry Christmas and be safe out there.

What dream come true, to see such beautiful black ducks, John. Congratulations on that very successful hunt. I hope you gave Mocha an extra treat.

John - Is the wing patch on the black duck in from actually green in color, or is it just the camera angle? I don't think I have ever seen a black with a green wing patch before...only blue.

Zach,

I thought the same thing when I saw it. I moved it around to get a different angle on the color but it was always green. I have not gotten one like this before and thought it may have been a hybrid but didn't want to take a chance so we called it a black.

Those Blacks are some darn fine ducks, and the difference in speculum colors is very interesting. In my book, that's a Good day. Congratulations. When the season reopens here, I hope one Black duck is in the cards. Our big thaw is Over......

John, nice pics. Shot yesterday afternoon, fog disappeared early , but the shooting was good. too busy delivering Xmas presents to go gunning.
Merry Christmas to all, straight and safe shooting...
