Maybe this can alleviate some boredom. I work on my own engines my brother is a auto mechanic as well as my father so I?ve owned and been fixing junk my whole life. In my truck and boats I put tools. This is a kit I made for my 20 Hp Yamaha but am changing it for my mud motor. Basically whenever I have my engine apart or am doing some sort of maintenance I look at the tools I have out. I also think about the breakdowns I?ve had on boats over the years and try and help myself out with fixing those problems. This is my small tool box that I keep in the small sneakbox and I just leave it inside all the time. The leather man has wire cutters and a serrated blade for when a rope or old crab pot finds my prop. I also have tape fuses for lights a pull rope zip ties and tiny vice grips. Some things I want to add is a 12 gauge flare and if I get another outboard a fuel fitting. Anyone has suggestions I would like to hear them. Some things in here are strictly for that boat like a pin and prop nut for a trolling motor when I use that. My brother said ?tube fuses who uses them? my stupid spot light does I learned that in the dark. I also put in a micro stream flashlight. I have a similar tool box for my boats.


The first time I could not make it back to the ramp - 16-foot plywood clamming garvey with a 33 Evinrude - it was because I had run out of gas. Turns out the O-rings in a fuel line fitting were worn out and leaking. I've always carried a few onboard since. (Of course, I've never needed them again in the ensuing not-quite-50 years....)

Josh, I use a GI waterproof can. Extra plug, cut off hammer, pliers, screw driver, whistle, save your expired flares. I vacuum seal all the least used tools. Keep a fuel filter, dry shirt vacuum sealed, just in case. John L, had a folded tarp, I think in case a over night was necessary.

I carry a length of weed wacker string to unclog the pee hole, a small SS wire brush and an adjustable wrench (I can pull the plugs with it).
 
I Keep a length of weed wacker string tied to motor lift handle to unplug pee hole on all my boats. In my 50 cal. G.I. ammo tool can I keep what you,ve mentioned as well as a roll of waterproof electrical tape for patching up fuel line if it cracks or gets nicked. Also a small spray can of WD40. I,m a pipe smoker so also keep some extra 9mm filters and bristle pipe cleaners along with a couple extra lighters in there in Ziploc bag along with basic first aid stuff.

Thanks for the suggestions the vacuum seal idea is a great one and I don?t have a rag which my father always has hunting. I?ve gutted a lot of deer with him only for him to say to me ?where is your rag? as he goes in his pocket to retrieve his with the look a father has when you forget something.
 
Josh, my father always carried a rag also. Different generation I guess. When we were young and used 3-5 hp evinrudes, we used nails for shear pins and always carried a pair of pliers in our pockets while gunning. Shear pins were expensive...
Who carries a knife still? Most of us carried a knife to school, we hunted or trapped before and after school.
 
Well remember those nails for shear pins. First outboard I used as a kid was a little 6 hp merc. Always kept nails and pair of pliers in tackle bx for emergencys. Had a little 4 hp air cooled outboard I think made by sears when I started duck hunting and had to change a few on it also.
