To my great excitement the wife said we're getting rid of the cat that keeps peeing on the carpet in the living room. This, in turn, opens up a vacancy for a new pet. Seeing as how cat piss is near impossible to get out, I'll be getting another dog. Right now I have an English Setter for upland hunting. I would really love to have a more versatile dog, so I have a companion in the duck blind and a dog that will work properly with my older the Setter. I've been doing some reading on the Small Munsterlander and am very impressed by their breeding standards as well as their performance in the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association trials.

I've never heard of them until recently. Have any of you hunted with or have owned one? How do they perform in the field? How do they do in the home? Any breeder recommendations?

Wonderful dogs. Been thinking of getting another dog, and I have been considering the SM. I've met Paul Jensen and his wife a couple of times at local NAVHDA events, and he is the guy I would start with. If he doesn't have any upcoming litters, he can point you in the right direction.

I would find a local NAVHDA training day or similar event near you and see if anyone is bringing SMs. Spend a couple of hours with the dogs and see if they fit your hunting style. They seem to be a very low-key and non hyper breed, although they are very determined and sharp hunters in the field.

If you're really serious about looking at dogs, I suggest that you go the the 2012 Pheasant Fest in Kansas City on February 17-19. It will be quite a drive from the Twin Cities but I think you would find it very worthwhile. I've gone the last couple of years and learned that many of the dogs shown are equally at home in the uplands or wetlands. I can't think of a single place where I could have gone and had the opportunity to see more breeds and talk to more breeders over a weekend. I chose to get a wirehaired griffon but looked closely at munsterlanders and several other breeds that I had not previously seen. And to top it off, any place where you can mess around with dogs, guns, ammo, and such can't be help but be fun.
 
Have looked into the Boykin spaniel breed? From my understanding they are all around good in the field and in the blind. Also good family dogs. I don't have one but when I do look for a 4legged companion I think this will be the one I seriously look at.
 
Steve whoever puts this pheasant fest on does a horrible job of local promotion. I had no idea it went on and live in the KC area. Believe the drive from the Twin Cities cannot be too bad with all the baseball fans that come here with their team
 
Pheasants Forever is the group that organizes the Pheasant Fest. Last year the event was in Omaha and in Des Moines in 2010. The show opens on Friday, February 17 with the "bird dog parade". I was able to get to the show last year in time to see that and thought it was pretty neat to have a hundred or so bird dogs parading through the convention center. Last year's show included at least the following breeds: [*]Boykin Spaniel [*]Bracco Italiano [*]Braque du Bourbonnais [*]British Labrador [*]Chesapeake Bay Retriever [*]Clumber Spaniel [*]Deutsch Wachtelhund [*]Deutsch Langhaar [*]German Shorthair [*]Golden Retriever [*]Irish Setter [*]Labrador Retriever [*]Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers [*]Pointer [*]Red Setter [*]Small Munsterlander [*]Spinone Italiano [*]Verein Deutsch Drathaar [*]Vizsla [*]Weimaraner [*]Wirehaired Pointing Griffon

Most of these breeds have at least one club/association present. The folks from these clubs are passionate about their favorite breeds and are well versed in their respective strengths and weaknesses. They also generally have a listing of breeders available whom you can contact. The small munsterlanders have been well-represented the last couple of years.

Nate, I appreciate the link to Jensen's kennel. Great idea in visiting a NAVHDA event to get a better idea in how they hunt.

Tom's right, most of us from the Twin Cities have only visited Kansas City to watch the Twins play, which I'm guilty of as well. That being said, I probably wont be making it down to Kansas City for Pheasant Fest.

It would be nice to go since there are many versatile breeds that you listed, Steve. I'll have to look into the Boykin as well as two other breeds that show some similarity with the SM: the Deutsch Wachtelhund & the German Langhaar.

Any of you know much on these breeds?
