Small (new) 2 stroke availability???

I'm DONE screwing around with a 1995 3 HP OMC outboard I bought new & have started looking for a replacement. Looking at the obvious alternatives (Mercury, OMC, & Yamaha), they don't seem to offer small 2 strokes anymore.

Does Nissan or anyone else offer what I'm looking for?

Due to EPA regs you may not be able to find new 2 strokes for sale in most places. The only way you will get one new is if it is leftover stock. Might be new in the box but it will be a discontinued model that was purchased by the dealer prior to regs going into effect in their area. We loaded up on them and have sold almost every one of them.

Looking at different websites looks like the smallest 2 stroke still in production is an ETEC 15 HP.

My 95 3 HP OMC gave me 13 years of absolutely trouble fee/almost no maintenance years, burning whatever sloppy oil/fuel mix I threw at it.

Looks like I'm going to have to sign up for oil sumps & more maintenance than I'm used to for a small outboard.

Whats wrong with the '95 you have? Most of those small outboards last forever.

The Honda is a four stroke. It is, however, a very good motor and relatively robust. I have logged a lot of hours using one. I am not a big fan of the centrifugal clutch on the prop when fishing. It makes it hard to troll very slow. Other than that I really like them. At 27 lbs you can carry it a distance with ease if you need to portage and it doesn't weigh the boat down when you need to drag it through the mud. I have a 1985 Evinrude 2 hp that won't die. Otherwise I would buy one.

I've used a couple small air cooled OBs & don't care for the high pitched racket they make.

My 3 HP was fine until last year when it would not start. Paid 200 bucks to get the fuel system/carburetor cleaned out. Another 80 bucks two weeks ago to install a new float in the carb. Now it won't go in to neutral & it would not start at the boat ramp at 5 AM on Saturday. I'd rather spend my time hunting than tinkering with it.

I've been using a 3.3 hp Mercury for 5 years now. The first year it drove me nuts. First, the shear pins were way too wimpy. If I hit any sort of vegetation I was forced to change the pin. I finally resorted to a steel pin. Then, I had some trouble getting it to run consistently. Toying around with the choke, I found a 'sweet spot' that runs really well.

Since then, I've had zero problems with it and over the last week have convinced a couple of buddies that having one is a really good idea. We were pushing in a mile or so into the marsh and poling/paddling with strong winds can be a real pain. One thing I do is I always shut off the fuel flow and run the gas out at the end of each trip. A buddy recommended doing this so that there is no fuel in the carb and lines which can (theoretically) gum things up.

Re: www.smalloutboards.com

I've looked at what they have available. I have a double ended dory w/motorwell & I do not have room for more than a 4.5 HP motor or so. I've used the same model 3 hp Tohatsu they have listed right now at a Maine camp I go to. Reliable bur filthy running little buggers. Also have a small internal tank that needs to be refilled often.

Re: running the fuel out

A good practice. If I had been more conscientious about this I might not be looking for a new motor.

Re: the EPA & dirty running 2 strokes

I have yet to talk to a OMC ETEC owner who is unhappy with their 2 stroke. Also seems to me that the foundation of current stories about dirty running 2 strokes/EPA "outrage" is a dealer who does not sell OMC outboards.

Gary,

Don't give up on your motor. Last year I took my '85 Nissan for a tune-up to a Rhode Island gentleman who works out of his garage. He did wonders with my motor, and when, shortly after the tune-up, it conked out he took it back in and got it going again without charging me an additional penny.

I felt his price for the tune-up was reasonable too.

I've been running it just about year-round ever since.

PM me if you'd like his telephone number.

I'm "done" with my 3 hp.

Anyone know anything (like source) of Parsun OBs. They are Chinese copies of Yamahas
