Snakes

I have a Pier and Beam home that I plan to replace the bathrooms in. In order to make a handlaid shower I want to strengthen underneath. Does anyone have an idea of something to spray under a house to make sure the snakes have gone before crawling under. I have killed several pygmy rattlers in the last few years close to the house.

I dont know of anything that would drive the snakes away that you would want to be crawling around in afterwards. Make lots of noise & I am sure they will head the other way (if there any under there) when you get under the house.
How big are the pygmy rattlers? All of the ones I have ever seen have been to small to bite anything other than maybe my little toe if it was sticking out of a sandal!

Try putting a LARGE amount of mothballs under there , the vapors should drive out any critters that are under there.

When I was in the Marine Corps, our Corpman told us that the small venomous snakes were the ones to stay away from. He explained that the small adolescent snakes cannot control their venom glands and will inject all of their venom into you. Where the larger, mature snakes will only inject a partial amount when they bite. Both scenarios will probably turn out bad without immediate treatment. Personally, I hate snakes and would hire that job out. Good luck!
Best, Mike

Won't your pigs go uner there? There is an island off Detroit where the rattlesnakes were thick so they dropped a few pigs off and they cleaned them up. Then they had to go out and shoot all the pigs...I think now it is home to a couple million Cormerants. I fricken hate snakes and would have done that work in the winter while they were sleeping.

Down here when people want to go out and catch rattlesnakes for the roundups they spray gasoline out of a fertalizer sprayer into the nests. Drives them crazy. I bet this would work for you, but it would smell like hell once you were done. I also agree with the mothballs. We have tons of diamondbacks around here so its pretty common practice to put some mothballs in your backyard around the fence perimeter if you have kids that play outside. Hope this helps

that would drive the snakes out would make it unpleasant, to downright dangerous, for you to work in unless you plan to completely remove it before you do what you need to do.....As I read it this is an enclosed space? And you want to put something in there to drvie out the snakes? Moth Balls and Sulfer would do it....they'll leave because they can't breath.....but think about it....now you have to work where the animals that were living there left because they couldn't breath......sorry but that just doesn't make sense....

Fear of snakes is understandable to those that are afraid of them so I'll forgo the comments on there being little need to worry about them being under your house just because you've killed a few "close" to the house, just remember that anything that you do to "force" a snake out will have a compounded effect on you because he can leave while you'll be forced to stay....

cause everyone that knows him knows that he's so FOS that his eyes are brown....and in addition in this case I don't know anyone named "Sutten" so I don't know if that would be dangerous or not.

If, by chance, he was referring to me and just forgot, in his doddering old age, (or maybe he's been using moth balls to repel snakes), how to spell my name, then I'd be happy to play St. Patrick and roust the snakes from under the house......send me a ticket, pick me up at the airport, feed me and keep me hydrated, (no skank beer allowed), and I'll be happy to declare the underneath of the concerned posters house "NEW IRELAND" and drive all the snakes out.....

Easy Peasy Irelandesey as they say....

Post some photos and we'll find 'em for ya :)

Hitch

Here ya go Hitch. My sister sent me this photo a few weeks ago showing the flooding on the lake she lives on. She didn't know the snake was there until it moved after she took the picture.

Nope, I just looked in the mirror and they are still blue!

If, by chance, he was referring to me and just forgot, in his doddering old age,,,,,,how to spell my name,

Ok ok, ya got me on that one. :>) :>)

Carl,,These things grow up to about 12 inchs in length and are very hard to see. They are really bad in leaf piles in the fall and many people get bit on their fingers and toes. Very painfull I think because my Aunt got one on her big toe and her entire foot swoll and turned black. She had to go to the emergency room and could not walk on it for about two weeks. Thanks for all the answers and I think I will try moth balls.

Steve I appreciate the offer man but I wouldn't want you to go through all that trouble just for lil old me. Beside that, my duck mutt would prob. bite you as he reads these post with me all the time and I think he likes Dave!!!!lol

one of those ugly, stinking, oily, mean old bastards would be about the only dog that wouldn't take an immediate shine to me.....my condolances for having to put up with both snakes and THAT for a dog......

You referring to Parks? Heck him and me are great friends....I like just about anyone that is older than me and Dave definately qualifies for that....I mean afterall when your first car was a chariot you know you're old right?

Steve

Nope,,Actually he looks exactly like yours in your photo and he's usually looking at me the same way he's looking at the camera. Just wanted to yank your chain,,
