snow goose hunting Vermont

Has anyone from Vermont hunted snow geese with a guide in Vermont? I tried a few years ago to hire one and two of them would not take Vermonters out. They felt we would take their hunting spots. I could not convince them otherwise. We hunt them on the water because of this reason and have bagged a few the two times i did this but would much rather be in a field. Thanks, Jeff

Hi Jeff-

Your best bet is Matt Martin, I believe his operation is called Frontier. They hunt more on the NY side and are very good. Decoying birds over large full body spreads, it can be very good. I know he fills up fast but probably worth a call to him. Good Luck.

2nd Matt Martin, Frontiers. Its gonna be a weird year. There are thousands showing already in Central NY !

Bill, where have you been seeing them? i usually see a ton of them by now but admit that i havent been looking too hard. my buddies have a huge spread.... mark

A friend of mine from Mass. hunted with Martin last year. Had a great time. But all the hunting was in New York. From what I've heard and seen, most of the snowies are now passing west of us. The Masena, NY, area has become a hot spot. Also, I think the lack of snow is really going to hurt us this year. I expect what birds we will see will blow right through the Champlain Valley.

Saw about 500 snows on the hudson yesterday, they were mixed in with at least 3000 canadas, seems early to me but who knows with the weather we've had, i guess anything goes this year

Lucky- Howdy!

Does Jamie Holstein still guide?

Hey John,

I believe Jamie is still guiding. But the snow goose hunting in the Addison area isn't what it used to be. Canadas are coming back, however ... I thought of you the last week of the LC duck season. Set up early at a "certain point." It was dead calm, and for 20 minutes all we heard was whistling wings.

Hope Maine is treating you well.

Jeff,
I've never been on a guided hunt, but I have had luck DIY shooting snows from fields in the Ferrisburg area. I have a spread of shells and silo's that bring the birds into pass shooting range but have not had much success getting them to decoy close. I typically only get a few shots when I do locate some birds and it is a lot of work to get in and set up. From the water, you should try going up towards Rouses Point NY where thousands of birds have been staging and some people have been having good luck shooting from boats in years past.

Best,
Mike
