Snow in the forecast

Go figure: season is over and winter really finally arrives. We actually have snow in the forecast for Moblie on Tuesday!
I bet my go-to spots south of the interstate on Mobile Bay will finally be covered up with gadwalls by the end of next week!
Is it just me or has winter come a month late for the last 5-10 years???

I guess the cold just didn?t make its way far enough south. We?ve only had one morning below 30 so far.

Winter seems to be coming late here and I've only been here 4 years. I don't think we will get snow....just the cold. Tomorrow is supposed to be in the 60s and then plummet to the 20s tomorrow night here.

Phil hit the nail on the head.

A large amount of birds moved through western NY at that time, and afterwards things dropped way off.

Lots of water and food in the states south of us, greatly dispersed the birds IMO.

Bodes well for more birds and reproduction this up coming Spring. God Willing.

I think you're right, Vince, there was a good frost seal on nearly all the Missouri coteau this fall, which is the "magic elixir" to get winter snow accumulations to melt and form runoff, captured in vernal and permanent wetlands prior nesting season; something that has not happened well for at least two years in North Dakota.

NPR just reported that the USPS is suspending mail service in four states in the Upper Midwest due to severe wind chill and temperatures....I guess that constitutes real winter!

Yesterday morning I went out with the dogs at 5:30. The first thing I noticed was how mild the temperature felt. When we got back inside and I got them fed I walked back out to check the temperature 4 F... The ambient temperature for the Noquemenon Ski Marathon held on the 26th was -18F at the start and -10F at the finish in Marquette. You know that the snow was VERY cold when you look at the finish times between the classic and free-style technique classes and the winners are separated by a little over a handful of minutes; much faster to ski in a polished set track than skating on cold sharp snow. The first thing you notice when skating on below zero snow is how quickly the glide phase of your stroke falls off; like skiing on sand paper, particularly on the uphill sections of the course.

Damn, thats cold!

Snow missed us and wrap-around clouds behind the front kept us around 30 this morning.
Not nearly as cold as north AL, up in Eric's neck of the woods, where it was in the mid-20s.

So... shorts and t shirt weather...

Good point, Carl, our proximity to Lake Superior is the principal ameliorating factor in holding our temps. significantly higher relative to inland locations at the same latitude. Minneapolis and Madison, Wisconsin have some brutal winter temperatures. We really appreciated the underground walk-way system at the Mayo Clinic's Rochester unit when Karen had her heart rebuilt; simply get in the hotel elevator and walk the tunnels.to clinic locations, shops, and restaurants.

Dogs were hopping from one foot to the other and limping by the time they got their "business" done this morning. I have been feeding my wife's horse at mid-day for the last week due to her pneumonia; one gallon of warm water and a gallon and a half of water to soak her hay 10 cups of hay cubes in a "soup". As with other ungulates, they lower their basal metabolic rate as well as restrict activity, heart rate, and subcutaneous body temps. aided by their counter current blood circulation systems in their legs. Over the last five days her group of mares has progressed from everybody standing around dozing with their long axis oriented at a right angle to the sun, to tightly clumped behind a toe of heavy brush and trees along the creek that sticks out from the north side of their pasture. Tuesday I had a major go around with a couple of hungry mares that decided they were going through the gate to get to Jazz's food bucket on the sled; just got missed by a not too well placed hoof while I was trying to get the gate closed behind her. It was a good reminder of how far away disaster lurks.

I wish the best to guys who work outside in these temps. Crivitz, Wi. lost a hundred year plus old lumber yard and sawmill in a fire, largely because of complications incurred by firefighters who had to rotate in groups to fight the blaze, due to the below zero work condition's impact on their health and well being.
