Soaking a rusted gun - advice needed

A friend just asked me what solution/solvent he should use for soaking a rusted gun/parts.

I have used straight Kerosene and diluted Phosphoric Acid (not together!) for such tasks - but I am a rank amateur in this realm.

Other suggestions?

Thanks!

are we talking internal - or the action -barrels - or everything?

to clean external parts that have any finish left under the rust - use Frontier Pads with a solvent like Hoppees, they will not remove bluing or case color on steel

internals - Kerosene may well be as good as anything- but an ultrasonic cleaner may be the best bet (but not old V springs)

Kroil

Outstanding stuff for unseizing rusted guns and other metal parts. It creeps into everywhere. I've used it numerous times for stuck chokes in shotguns.

Here at work we have a vat of Kroil that we use in a sonicator for the extremely rusty guns that we need to get working. The best stuff ever and the sonicator cuts down on the sitting in kroil time by a loooong bit. Can be kind of strong smelling, so I suggest using a well ventilated area to use it

I purchased a new handgun that had been in a flood. It sat for an extended period before the insurance company released it and I acquired it. I am testing the product below for a member of this forum so I disassembled the gun placed it in a plastic tub and spayed it down, let it sit for 24 hours and then simply wiped the surfaces down. it removed all the visible rust. I day later I went to reassemble and found that some hidden areas were bleeding rust solvent from deep inside the plastic. Wiped that off and sprayed it all down again. Let it sit for 48 hours and wiped everything down. It has functioned flawlessly since. I did all this in my family room with not bad smells.
When my son has a little light rust show up on his black powder. I handed him this same product and a quick squirt, short wait and the rust wiped off.

Hard to argue with success.

David I've been using that same product as my oil with very good results so fat this season. Haven't used it as a deruster or penetrating oil yet glad it works well should the need arise. Kroll is something I've used in the past with great results and widely available

Steve, bought a A5 and m12 that are frozen shut. Sprayed with kroil and let set for weeks. Try to get the wood off and put in a pvc pipe with kero. Large wood, plastic or lead hammer, just tap it lightly every week. It will loosen up, don't rush the tapping part.
Did a old rem hammer that would not open. Now totally functions as a wall hanger and looks good. Nice winter project when the snow flies.

David-

Thanks for the report on the Protection First Class!

We haven't done a ton of testing yet on removing rust that's already there, but it sounds from your report like we'll have to do that next. I know it prevents rust and lubricates better than anything we've tested against, but we'll have to set up a test against all those products for freeing rusted parts and removing rust.

Take care!

Steve-

Have him try that PFC I sent you. It should work really well. We haven't done a ton of testing for that, but I know from my own experience that it works. I know I had a rusted/stuck choke tube and I sprayed PFC around it and let is sit for a few days and it came right out.

Let me know if you need me to send him a sample can.

Thanks,
