Some decoy carving help

Well, I am finally going to take the plunge. I bought two books ( Decorative Decoy Carver's by Bruce Burk and Traditonal Gunning Decoys by Mark Costilow). Jim Romig is sending over some heads to get started.

Question, being hard of hearing over a 50% loss) I am very visual. I need to see things being done. Can anyone recommend DVDs on carving and painting. I am thinking of taking some painting classes through the vocational school. They usually have a variety of classes an night a few times a week just to get started.
 
Mike, Just call Lenny and tell him when you're coming over. He won't mind, honest.......................Kevin

I will be watching this post in hopes that you get some good advice that I also need.

I talk to Lenny about once a week or so and a few times a week via the internet. I was looking to get some basics down first. It will make our time much more productive if I have some idea on what to do. I am going to probably start with divers in cork b/c I want to make my own rig to hunt over. From there I will more than likely follow Lenny and Jode with the Delaware style. The cork Barnegat seems to work real well in the choppy waters and since I am doing more big water hunting, it seems like the right place to start. Plus it is easier to do the divers in cork

Pat has videos on carving and painting, never watched them so I can't personally vouch for them but they are supposedly very good.

Willy at the duckblind has tutorials on carving but not sure about videos, give him a call and I'm sure he can help you out.

Doug has some very good tutorials, but no videos that I know of.


The best thing you can do in my opinion is try to find a local carver who is willing to show you the ropes. A good mentor will do more for you than any video ever will.

 
Mike, Call Willy at the Duck Blind. He does have a great video on making hunting decoys. From start to finish, band saw to paint. Kit to go with it too. IMO, Willy is one of the best teachers there is. And his video is how I got started so, so, many years ago. Was on VHS(was going to say Beta..hehe) and now he has them on DVD.

Have fun, its a little frustrating at the beginning but everyone gets easier and better (hopefully)
