Some good news!

Yesterday I went to get a hair cut ( yes, I do that once in a blue moon) and was telling the barber about my teal hole drying up. He grabbed his cell phone and dialed a number but with no luck. “I was trying to set you up for Saturday. I know someone who is irrigating their field Friday night and it should be full of ducks by Saturday morning.”

Edward, then continued to cut my hair, stopped, stepped back and said, “Al, I will be irrigating my pasture on Saturday night. I always see ducks there when I do that. In fact last weekend, it was full of teal.” I guess he could see that my eyes must have been showing a lot of excitement.

So, all was not lost when the hole dried up. I now have a hunt planned for the last day of the early teal season which is this coming Sunday. I will call Edward’s neighbor and ask him if I can park my truck at his place and cut across his land to the pasture gate. David was the guy who called me two years ago when he left the irrigation system on too long and flooded his newly planted winter wheat field. He said, “Al, is duck season on?” After I confirmed it, he said, “There has to be at least a thousand ducks on my field.” By the way, he wasn’t exaggerating and, yes, our early teal season was on.

I can hardly wait for Sunday morning to roll around. Habi will be at my side. Not only that, I have never hunted teal in a cow pasture before so this will be something new.

Good luck for you, I believe we make our own good luck and it sounds like you have been doing well. Good luck on the teal.

Way to go Al! Watch out for the floatin cow paddy!...hehe. Mike said it was good to advertise!

Mother always told me good things happen to good people. Nice to hear stories like this these days.

Al,
What's your plan for camo and hiding you and Habi in an open cow pasture? Will there be dry spots where you can use a blind of some kind? Hope you have a awesome hunt. Also what's the limit on teal out there?

I want to thank all the well wishers on this thread. I woke up at 3AM I was so darn excited. Well, since I had a half mile hike to get there I left early. Once through the gate, I knew something wasn't quite right. Got to about the middle and there was no water anywhere. Found out much later this morning that the farmer did not irrigate because of a family crisis that came up very late and he didn't feel like he should call me.
Now that I know what it looks like I will be back some other time----maybe if he irrigates the last week of October when our duck season begins.
Here is a picture of what his pasture looks like. He uses this one during the winter months. I used a flash

When I got back to the truck I decided to check out his flooded winter wheat field. I can't hunt that because it is too close to the highway and his sister's RV park for birders! I don't need that kind of attention.

It was tempting---these ducks were only 25 yards away.

Sorry to hear about the early wakeup without notice. Great photos. That last one is especially cool.

I must ask though, what is a yellow head?
