We just received our first influx of hummers that are now migrating south towards Mexico and Central America. Some of them, like the Rufous, come from as far north as southeastern Alaska (like the Ketchikan area) and British Columbia, their breeding grounds. They are amazing little dudes.

The males come through first. Here are some adult male rufous hummers. Check out their bright orange gorgets.

The drought has taken its toll this year. Even the birds seem to know what is going on around here and are avoiding the area. We had only a handful of black-chinned hummers and no broadtail hummers.

Now take your thumb and index finger and measure out what you think 3 inches is. That is the length of the adult male calliope. His mate is only about 2 1/2 inches long and they are known as the smallest bird in North America. The adult male can really show off with his beautiful gorget. He can fan out that gorget when courting a female. Quite impressive for sure.

You'll notice quite a bit of pollen on this guy's beak.

I'm liking the way Cayenne is beginning to look. She will be 6 months old on the 27th of July.

Have you ever been this totally relaxed?

Our friends, the Mitchussons loaned us their birthing kennel. It worked charms in my office. With the temps between 98 and 108, we opted for the litter to be in our house. Last night they made the big trip to the kennel. It cooled off to 94F.

Puppy breath anyone?

I kept these two shots to show what a hummer can do if they need to be evasive. They are the only bird that we know of that can fly upside down. I have seen this quite a few times. The first shot shows a juvenile rufous at the feeder. Just above it flew in an adult male and the youngster left "post haste"!

Bev and I were out walking the herd (our dogs) late in the evening a couple of nights ago. Just as the sun was setting in the west a stream of light hit the hills just to our east on the other side of the Rio Grande valley. Some of God's handy work for sure.

If you look hard enough you can see a few sprinkles of rain on the lily pads. Even though it was only a few drops, it was very refreshing. We sure hope to get some more during our monsoon season.

Al, as per usual, great pics. I can relate to that pup, last night I was beat. dropped over in the bed on the back, I woke up in the same position, bed not even messed up. (yes, my back is aching today!!)

Thanks for the pics.

Great hummingbirds Al. I was sitting out on the patio tonight here in Nj and what stopped by to sip at a potted plant but a hummingbird. I always enjoy seeing the different ones you get out West. But I will say that seeing one is always a highlight of the day.

Great pictures Al! As neat as the hummingbirds are I just love the puppy pics.

Thanks, Paul. Glad you liked them. I, too, like them but not as much as Bev does. She is a puppyaholic.

Glad you liked the pictures, Mark. It is fun to see something that will trigger your mind about what you have seen or might have. Have you ever taken pictures of your cat?

I, too, have been that tired, Eric. Normally that comes during the beginning of duck season. Drop dead tired!

I remember when I used to see an occasional ruby throated hummingbird when I lived in Wisconsin. It was always exciting. They seemed to be so darn territorial. Well down here it would be this guy, the Rufous. He is no different when ti comes to "territorial".

Great pics as always Al

Ofcourse I faver the puppy pick

Hey Doug,
Good to hear from you. I knew they would get your attention. I know you must be super busy with tons of things to do. How is the new tractor running and are you making good use of it? Any pictures of your recent litter?
Al

Fabulous pics, Al. How close are you to the birds when you are getting the shot? Are you just sitting in your lounge chair by the pond and waiting for them to flit in and around? I know after a while, they get real comfortable with someone sitting and remaining relatively still. I like the way Rubys will make their little peep call as they come and go. Do the others make any calls? Trip.

Hi Al
Yes been real busey, trying to get my shop in order.
Tractor is running great.
Heres a pick of the little ones eating there first solid food last week

Al, I always look forward to your pics...you make NM look prtty appealing!

We actually have an office up on El Camino Real St, and I keep looking for an excuse to fly out for a "site inspection." Haven't been able to sell it to the boss yet!

Thanks so much, Frank. Bev and I moved down here from Wisconsin back in 97 and have loved every second of our time here. New Mexico is truly "enchanted"!

El Camino Real is something special. To think that this was a foot path originally from Mexico City to Santa Fe is hard to grasp when you consider some of the harsh environments encountered along the way. I travel on it every day of duck season to get to my hunting areas.
Just to the south of us, only 30 miles away, Ted Turner donated some of his ranch land to help promote El Camino Real. They now have a brand new building filled with artifacts and pictures that is built up on a hill overlooking the "highway"! The main entrance to this site is just off I-25. What is amazing is that I can see that building from one of my blinds when hunting teal during our early season.
I have often wondered what those brave men and women endured while making this trek. I have heard plenty of the Apache raiding parties that took place along it.
Where I cut firewood and also go duck hunting is right along the El Camino Real. If you come here I could take you to a spot where there were old Apache camp sites. I have found many shards while digging around.

Forgot to mention, Frank, that as the crow flies the El Camino Real is only 3 miles from where our home is.
