My idea was to capture the hen and drake migrating down some long forgotten stretch of coast at night.

Beautiful work.
From what I have read, it sounds like Labrador Ducks were never very common, even when Europeans first arrived in North America.
Us showing up seemed to be the straw that broke them.

Carl your right, they population was never very large. Add pollution and habitat loss and it was bye-bye to the Labrador Ducks.
