Sons first duck hunt. Long winded

SUPER LONG WINDED
Today was our youth duck opener. Two day season for the kids. He had football mid day so mom didn’t want him up early. Went to football, came home grabbed the guns and waders, ran to the boat and was set up by 415. Gave him a shell and waited. A friend and his three kids met us out there.

Strange turn of events. We saw a tiny of woodies but it’s a smaller marsh off the river , pretty sure they got hammered all morning. The this lady launches her kayak(150-200 yards away) starts paddling over, slowwly! Naturally some birds are in the air, buddy is calling, kids are taking turns w jerk rig. She’s still heading our way. We’re thinking this is some Karen (apologies to anyone named Karen). Who is anti hunting. We can see she’s taking selfies, she’s talking to someone in the phone, etc. then a group of kids got some shooting to the south a ways. She appears to head hurriedly towards that direction. Then stops when she’s 150 yards out and slightly south of us. 3 geese coming towards us. Start calling , she’s paddling towardish to us. Birds change path. Very frustrated, but trying to stay cool, at this point my son and buddies oldest daughter are like she’s trying to ruin our spot etc. we had been standing , moving around multiple times by now. And we’re staring into the sun.

This lady get like stupid clod to the spread. So I said excuse me we’re trying to hunt. She replied with a wet choking noise, almost like you were drowning. My buddy stands up, “hey are you ok!?” Lady completely oblivious to us being there at all, after standing , waving , etc earlier. She’s “ like omg, I thought these were real! How does the neck move in that thing!?” Somehow she thought a plastic goose head was moving? So then we explain it’s youth season trying to finish last 30 min of hunt. Then asked if it was us that made the boom sound earlier, “no that’s a group down there that shot”. Her- “do they shoot real guns?” Us- “ uh yeah”.
Startled look in her eyes, she says she’ll get out of our way, have a nice hunt. Proceeds to paddle 25 yards north then take more selfies!

Needless to say we didn’t have a single bird decoy. Had a bunch of snacks and pops, kids had a blast. Then when we leave . 25+’ proline w/a is in like 3-5’ water no one visible. Motor to them, you good? ( obviously tinkering w inboard motor). Yes we’re not broke down, just changing plug wires and rechecking timing, we think we messed it up. Ugh, you want me to tow you away from the shallows? Sure , throw us a line and you can tow us out. YOU DONT HAVE A LINE!? Well I can find one I guess.

Ended up towing them into a the channel edge. Asked if they’re gonna drop anchor? Yeah we will get it in a minute. Drifting back towards them, almost hit the kicker motor. I apologize, “don’t worry it’s a customers” I was sorta oissed I wasted my effort helping them, but I boat alone a bunch all year as long as we don’t ice up, so I always want more good karma.

Good morning, Tony~
Great tale - well-told - albeit of a less-than-ideal experience for you and the kids.

I imagine many of us have encountered similar happenings over the years. Mild weather and the ever-increasing "innocence" of society about hunting certainly has made such encounters more common in recent decades.

Probably the most distressing moment was the “Don’t worry it’s a customer's” attitude displayed by the erstwhile "boat mechanics".

Too often nowadays I find myself sighing and muttering to myself......"Modern life...."

All the best,

SJS

Good for you getting out there with your son and other friends. I remember the days of juggling youth sports with hunting quite well. Part of the reason my son focused on baseball is it interfered the least with duck season. I suspect as your son gets older you two will be able to go deeper into the wild and avoid these encounters. It may not have been the perfect hunt but your son probably picked up on how to deal with people oblivious to your mission without getting confrontational.

Oh, the woos of early season. In any event, glad you made it a good day for the kids! Their turn will come!

Sounds like you handled it just right. You took advantage of a teachable moment and made it a positive experience for the kids. It's important for them to learn early that not everybody is making a political statement. There are lots of people out there who are just plain oblivious, not out to conciously aggravate hunters. With the partisan atmosphere that dominates the news today, it's important the kids understand that and can have a good time with plan B. Two thumbs up for teaching them to always offer assistance to boaters in distress.

Thanks guys, my buddy and his older daughter had a horrible anti hunter come out , using profanity, hitting decoys with paddle etc. his daughter was assuming the lady was intentionally ruining our hunt.

After it all happened, his daughter said how does she not know these are decoys? I said, you know about ducking hunting and hunting in general because of where, how and who raised you. That lady probably doesn’t know a duck hunter, so she doesn’t know decoys.

It’s all relative. This spot is very urban, so it’s expected to have someone close to you when out there. We been called on, scared the crap outta people , etc. I’m just glad the kids had fun. They’ve hunted with us before(the kids) but this was first season we’re gonna get them shooting. Hopefully get them out around Halloween and bang up the blue bills when they first get here!!!

Forget about anti-hunters. I once had a fellow duck hunter scull up on my spread. He was pretty well known--wrote a book about sculling boats--and a friend of the guy who let me keep my boat on the Bay. I was set up solo, boat hidden up a creek. Slow day, so I was sitting in the blind with binocs looking for birds. I see someone sculling out front--maybe 1/2 mile off, way across the rice. He's glassing back at me, and then he gets down in the boat and starts sculling up a creek with purpose. I got back under cover too, hoping he might push a few birds that would see my decoys. He disappeared in the rice; no birds flew, and I forgot he was out there. Figured he sculled out around the point or packed it in. And then I saw a grassed up boat out of the corner of my eye sculling up the creek, about 100 yards out. I stood up and waved, and it turned out he'd spotted my decoys from way out in the Bay and sculled all the way up to me thinking they were real. Best compliment I ever had on a decoy spread. If I'd been calling he'd have known I was a fake!
