Source for gill nets

I'd like to try a net rig this year. I am searching for 1/2" gill netting in nylon. Everything that I have found online in that size is monofilament. Does anyone on the coasts have any sources for nylon gill nets?

Thanks in advance,
Steve

What do you catch with 1/2" netting? That's awful small stuff, I'm not sure they even make it that small.

You can try Ocean Products in Mathews Virginia they are a source to almost everyone on the bay and the outer banks. Make sure who ever you get them from knows how to "hang" the net. If I can help holler.

Steve after rereading your post, are you wanting it for the decoy rig they do? If so 1/2 netting for trap nets would be pretty heavy if you used a very large piece once it is wet. You check with nylon net co. and they can tell you the different size twine you can get and the size of the mesh, also, I think it is measured stretched corner to corner. Hope this helps.

More info on what I am trying to do...

I would like to try making a "net rig" of decoys. Basically take a 10'x10' or 20'x20' piece of netting, and mend head lines on each side. Then attach ~50 decoys on the net to make a blob of birds.

From what I've read gill nets may not be the best choice, because they have so much "stretch" to them?? I have no experience with nets. I looked on Memphis Net and Twine and was wondering if this would work?

I've never rigged decoys on a net before. But I think you could get away with a larger mesh size. Even say 5" or 6" mesh would be plenty, after all you're not going to tie the decoys on that close together. A smaller mesh is just going to fill up with more trash and be harder to haul back in.

John,
Definitely could, but folks who have done this have said that larger mesh size will tangle. With a 5" or 6" size mesh, the decoys could spin through and then tangle.

Rich,
It is always dangerous when I think..........

Steve,

Your idea looks good in theory but I wonder about the practicality of it. Where I hunt, with the exception of Lake Michigan or Green Bay, there is so much vegitation in the water that a net like that would be so hopelessly munged up the first day that I doubt I would ever use it again. How do you get your birds out of the middle of the net or do you just leave them there all day? What about a dog? Personally, I've never hunted with a dog that was that steady or handled well enough to keep it out of something like that during a retrieve. I've had single lines wrapped around my prop shaft before, I can't imagine the mess that one could generate with a net of this sort.

I've seen reports of using something similar with wire and floats for a whole mess of coot for example that you could shake using a jerk string contraption. Simulates the feeding frenzy when Coot find some delectable forage that they want to get at before their neighbor. A much smaller scale than you're talking about I think.

I'd be very interested in your comments after you use it a few times.

Steve, I can see why you want a small net size. I really dont' llike the idea of gill netting though, for a lot of reasons - tangles, trash, etc... Have you thought about a stiffer netting like one of the glass reinforced deer fencings? They come with 1" openings and the good stuff is good. The gill net is going to grab every bolt, tab, etc and be a nightmare.

Oh OK. I'll be interested in your results. BTW - I ended up with one of your old MLB Kevlar Supermags. Replaced my Classic with it and love it. It accounts for bunches of Old Squaw, BB and RH every year as well as the joy of seeing someone come out of it the very first time with an ear to ear grin.

Pete,

It is a small world!!

That was one of my original boats when I got my rig. That boat has a lot of good JuJu!!! I'll be honest,... we used them and didn't look at them!!!

Glad to hear that it is still being used. They are comfy boats.

Best,
Steve

Pete, In the area where I hunt, I do not have to deal with vegetation. Also, I only layout hunt, so I don't use a dog. I plan on using very short droppers to eliminate the chance of decoys wrapping around one another. Todd, Do you mean something like this? http://www.memphisnet.net/...etting_bird_aviaries Thanks, Steve

Steve, that isn't what I meant, but that is very nice stuff and I think it woudl suit you well. I've handled some of what you linked and it has appropriate stiffness in my mind and feels nice. The deer fence would be much less nice.

Either way, I'd order a sample and put in in the freezer to test flexability.
